Wait, What Do You Mean LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight Will Only Have 7 Playable Characters?? That’s Crazy!
- LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight Shines Bright—But Where Are the Villains

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight looks amazing. It looks like it will perfectly blend the epic scale of the Christopher Nolan Dark Knight trilogy with the quirkiness of LEGO humor. However, now a flaw is beginning to emerge – namely, it looks like the game will only have seven playable characters.

What? Only 7 Playable Characters?

The official FAQ for LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight states that the game “will feature seven playable characters, including Batman, Jim Gordon, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Catwoman, and Talia al Ghul.” That’s it. While seven playable characters might seem like a lot for most games, LEGO games typically feature dozens of playable characters, and unlocking new characters is part of the appeal. For example, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga featured 380 characters just in the base game, with the DLC adding several more.

You Can’t Play as the Villains?

Well, you can play as Catwoman and Talia al Ghul, who are morally gray characters, but you can’t play legendary villains like the Joker, Bane, or the Penguin. Obviously, everyone wants to step into the shoes of Batman when playing a Batman game, but playing as the villains would have its own appeal. The villains could also have special skills that could access secret areas, much like how certain areas can only be accessed by certain character types in other LEGO games. People have come to expect a large selection of playable characters in LEGO games, so taking that away is removing a large part of the series’ general attraction.

Conclusion

The game’s trailer that was revealed at Gamescom 2025 looks awesome. Much like The LEGO Batman Movie, it looks like this game will both celebrate Batman’s legacy and have fun with it. It’s just a shame that there are so few playable characters. Perhaps the villains will be available to play in a DLC pack, but when most LEGO games give us dozens of characters with the base experience, locking villains behind a DLC paywall would feel like a money-grubbing move. Seriously, why do they think we wouldn’t want to play as the Joker? Regardless, the game should still be amazing, but it’s hard not to be a bit disappointed.
