Warframe’s next story update, The Old Peace, will come out December 10. This update will introduce the game’s 63rd Warframe, a demon-themed Warframe named Uriel, and a new weapon class – a bayonet that also serves as a melee weapon. The update, inspired by World War I, will feature the player character reliving repressed memories of a failed ceasefire that led to the game’s past, present and future.
The origin of The Old Peace was the result of Digital Extremes’ CEO Steve Sinclair, who wrote “Trench Warframe” on a whiteboard. Warframe creative director Rebecca Ford told PCGamer that the possibilities were essentially hard to ignore.
Lincoln Carpenter, a writer for PCGamer, described the WWI-themed update. He wrote, “The Old Peace story quests will explore the tragedy of two children doomed to find themselves on opposing sides of treaty negotiations that, from the outset, we know will fail disastrously. While players have slain millions of enemies as their Tenno Operators, the update is the most that Warframe has centered the player character’s past as a child soldier.”
“A particular inspiration,” Ford said to PCGamer, “was the Angels of Mons—a phenomenon reported during World War I in which soldiers alleged their units were miraculously aided by phantom bowmen or angelic warriors.”
“A Warframe entering a field of battle would feel like the Angel of Mons for a given battalion,” Ford said. “I’m not saying that this is a textbook World War I homage, but it’s very much the feel. And the battlefield being alive is something that we really wanted to do right.”
MMOBomb’s QuintLyn Bowers detailed the update’s Focus progression system. Bowers wrote,
“the expansion of the game’s Focus school in the progression system. It introduces special artifact quests (not to be confused with story quests), and introduces five legendary weapons, each representing a different focus school.”
Bowers added,
“To begin Focus expansion, players will first need to have completed The Old Peace. Then they’ll have to retrieve the legendary weapons. These weapons are not part of the normal weapon pipeline and are needed to expand the Focus tree.”
Uriel was the final Warframe designed by Michael “Mynki” Brennan. Brennan, who was the game’s first art director, passed away from cancer on October 15, 2024. He was 50 years old.
