After KT Rolster’s mid-year resurgence, many expected them to qualify for the World Championship as the LCK fourth seed. However, they stunned the World by defeating GenG Esports 3-2 in Round 2 and qualifying as at least the third seed. That victory meant T1 would become the fourth seed of the LCK. They faltered in the next two series, being dispatched by HLE and GenG. Bdd and Cuzz will be pivotal in the success of KT as they bring the rollercoaster to the World Stage. Can the Mid-Jungle take KT beyond their expectations?
KT Rolster began the year by replacing three of their players. Kim “Deft” Hyuk-kyu retired, while Cho “BeryL” Geon-hee and Hong “Pyosik” Chang-hyeon left for other teams. They started the year with Han “Way” Gil as their support, and he has replaced Peter on a couple of occasions. Shin “Casting” Min-jae and Park “Paduck” Seok-hyeon have made appearances, replacing PerfecT and deokdam, respectively. Towards the end of the year, they settled on the current roster for their starters.
At the start of the year, KT were a mid-table team at best. Towards the end of the first half of the year, KT started to ramp up. They ascended to fourth place after the Road to MSI and stayed in that spot until the Playoffs. They caused an upset in Round 2 of the Playoffs by becoming the first team in seven months to defeat GenG in a Bo5. The victory qualified them for the World Championship, but they lost two consecutive series 3-0 and finished as the third seed.
Two of the players who have struggled to find consistent performances this year are PerfecT and Peter. They are also the only two players on the roster to have not made an appearance at the World Championship. The two players will need to deal with the pressure of playing at the World Championship to give KT a chance at succeeding at the international event. Good performances from the players will not be enough for them. They must ascend beyond their best to ensure that KT performs. KT can not rely on Cuzz and Bdd in every series if they want to be successful.
KT’s shock victory over GenG was thanks to the performances of Cuzz and Bdd. The two players managed to make the series their own, but it was only enough to get a 3-2 victory over GenG. If the two World Championship rookies struggle, the Mid-Jungle will need to hit those same highs again to give KT a chance against the best teams at the World Championship. Bdd was voted as the second-best mid in the LCK Regular Season, despite KT struggling to break into the top three before the Playoffs. We might see KT drop out of the Swiss Stage if these two can not reach those highs.
Reading where KT will finish at the World Championship is a difficult task. Their peak is enough to beat GenG, which were not at their best, while their floor may be crashing out of the World Championship. At a minimum, this team must qualify for the Bracket Stage. They might be the third seed, but they are the weakest LCK team at the competition.
KT’s position in the Swiss Stage pools depends on the result of the Play-Ins. If T1 wins, they begin in the second pool, while an Invictus Gaming win places them in the third pool. If T1 wins, their potential opponents are: Anyone’s Legend, Movistar KOI, Vivo Keyd Stars, and Team Secret Whales. If IG wins, their potential opponents are: Fnatic, 100 Thieves, PSG Talon, and IG.
