Hanwha Life Esports and G2 Esports joined Anyone’s Legend and KT Rolster in the Worlds Bracket Stage yesterday. Today, one more team will secure their spot. Another will see their year come to an end. Movistar KOI face off against Team Secret Whales in an elimination series. GenG Esports find themselves in the 2-1 Bracket for the first time in the Swiss Stage, and must defeat Top Esports to advance to the Quarterfinals.
The elimination match between MKOI and TSW kicks the day off at 1:00 AM PT (10:00 AM CET). GenG will face TES directly after the first series concludes.
MKOI 2-0 TSW
MKOI have looked better than their record in the Swiss Stage shows. They should have beaten KT Rolster on day one. They faltered against G2, but given the LEC first seed’s qualification, losing to them is not a massive blunder. TSW, on the other hand, has been less than impressive since their victory over VKS. They fell unceremoniously to KT and FlyQuest. TSW has what it takes to surprise, but given their current form, it seems unlikely.
GenG 2-0 TES
TES was one series away from qualifying for the Bracket Stage. However, they failed to show up against KT, coming nowhere close to winning a game. Their previous games were against G2 and 100Thieves, who do not compare to the strength of GenG. GenG narrowly lost to AL and then dominated T1. At their peak, TES can put pressure on GenG, but they look far off from that at the moment. GenG should dominate in this series, especially with Canyon making a return to form to shut down Kanavi.
Even if GenG and TES are not eliminated after the series, they do not want to be in the 2-2 Bracket. Having to play against the likes of T1 and Bilibili Gaming (if they win) is never a situation you want to put yourself in. CTBC Flying Oyster is also in the mix, having shown that they can compete with the best. For MKOI and TSW, they must win to stay alive in the tournament.
