Angel Reese has surpassed expectations since she came into the WNBA. Some teams had doubts over her abilities, and so far, her records have proven that they were wrong to doubt one of the bright young superstars of the league.

After missing out on the playoffs last season, she wanted to play in a postseason game this time. To help her in that quest, the Chicago Sky brought in some veteran players, along with drafting a few other young players.

The idea was that Reese, fellow draftee Kamilla Cardoso, along with this year’s picks, Ajsa Sivka, Hailey Van Lith, and Maddy Westbeld, would form the core for the future.

Add in those veteran players and a young, innovative head coach, the organization had the recipe for future success. The recipe, however, did not pan out the way they thought it would.

Starting with Courtney Vandersloot‘s season-ending injury, to the lack of confidence, nothing worked, and the Chicago Sky, despite playing more games than last season, will finish this season with a worse record.

All of this has frustrated the Maryland native, who called for the front office to sign better players. She threatened to leave if the situation did not improve, and that has caught on with the media and her fans.

For those comments, the Sky suspended her for half a game, but then, it was declared that she would miss the 2nd half due to a back injury. Then, head coach Tyler Marsh did not clarify whether the injury would force her to miss the remaining two games.

But signs are pointing towards a potential exit. The LSU star’s body language is not conclusive, but if she were to move, there are three teams she can join to fight for championships.

The Phoenix Mercury are missing Angel Reese’s rebounding and defense

If there is one team Angel Reese can join and instantly elevate to become a championship contender, it is the Phoenix Mercury. The team is currently fighting to secure the best playoff seed, but could face difficulties in getting past teams playing better defense.

Their current Big 3 of Alyssa Thomas, Kahleah Copper, and Satou Sabally received a major boost when DeWanna Bonner joined. However, the team lacks a true interior presence and might get outplayed in that area by the others competing against them.

The 6′ 3″ forward may not be a true rim protector, but her defense against other elite forwards and centers, along with her otherworldly rebounding, is what the Mercury need.

It also helps that Thomas and Copper are close to Reese, and thus, chemistry should not be a problem. The only concern is that the franchise does not have exciting trade assets.

Unless they are willing to let go of the plethora of shooters in their squad, the Sky might not be interested in a trade. But if they throw in some future picks, maybe Angel Reese can contend for titles.

Atlanta Dream is a less sizzling, but still viable option for Angel Reese

Another contender who could benefit from Angel Reese’s rebounding and defense is the Atlanta Dream. Their offseason moves have helped 1st year head coach Karl Smesko tune the squad to become a quiet juggernaut.

One of the changes he made to facilitate that growth was to move star center Brittney Griner to the bench. If they do not manage to reach the WNBA Finals, they could look at offloading Griner for the Sky forward.

Reese can dominate the interior while giving the Dream the rebounding that they currently lack. Coupled with the plethora of shooters at their disposal, the team could become an instant championship threat.

The only problem is that the team’s market size might not interest the otherwise brand-savvy Reese. But she is capable of making something out of nothing. Therefore, a championship run might be the best way for her to do that.

Angel Reese pairing with Paige Bueckers for the future

No. 1 overall pick Paige Bueckers has given enough proof of what she can do with a basketball. An efficient shooter who picks her spots, can orchestrate the game plan, and is exceptional as a defender.

All these skills will work wonderfully alongside Angel Reese. This potential move, however, will not result in an immediate fight for the championship. But what it will do is take the burden off the LSU star, as she will have her fellow 2020 recruiting classmate alongside her.

In terms of draft picks, the Wings are again in the running for the No. 1 overall pick. The top brass will likely listen to Bueckers and draft her girlfriend, Azzi Fudd. That creates a dominant one-two punch that might not leave the team in the future.

That leaves the Wings with a pair of 2027 1st round picks and the additional 2nd rounder from next season. These can be traded as they will receive a massive boost to their front court with the addition of Reese.

Then, they can pair her with rising star Luisa Geiselsoder in the paint, giving them a solid interior presence as the German can stretch defenses with her multi-level scoring. However, this is a recipe for the future, with them possibly making the playoffs next season.

Angel Reese’s fans might want her to join A’ja Wilson at the Las Vegas Aces or the New York Liberty. The problem is that both those franchises are stacked at the forward/center position and do not have the trade assets to entice the Chicago Sky.

If the 23-year-old‘s current team is willing to let her go and restart with their plethora of young players, they will look for the right compensation. Without an enticing one, they might as well grind out and take a chance that the current situation eases out.
