Team USA has been making headlines worldwide, not only for its dominant wins in the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers but also for its fast and smooth style of play.

As the team continues its run, here are five key takeaways from its latest game.

Balanced Scoring Makes the Team Stand Out

The dominant performances by Team USA are credited to strong scoring performances. Even against New Zealand, it was no different as once again, Team USA showcased its depth. Notably, Rhyne Howard led all scorers with 18 points, continuing her impressive form in the tournament.

Then comes Caitlin Clark, who added 14 points, while Kelsey Plum and Monique Billings each scored 10. Angel Reese and Kiki Iriafen chipped in with nine points each.

Defensive Pressure Fuels the Run

Even Team USA’s defense played a major role in their latest victory. That’s because New Zealand committed 28 turnovers, while Team USA had just 10.

Not just that, the Americans also finished with 15 steals compared to New Zealand’s five. All thanks to Paige Bueckers and Howard, both of whom recorded three steals each, repeatedly disrupting New Zealand’s offense.

Team USA Shifts Momentum After Early Scare

New Zealand had its moments for a brief span early in the game, as it looked competitive. The Kiwis even led 12–11 in the first quarter. But Team USA quickly responded with a massive 43–6 run in the second.

And hence, by halftime, they had built a commanding 54–18 lead, which effectively decided the game.

Caitlin Clark Never Disappoints

After returning from an eight-month hiatus, CC continues to give fans plenty to cheer about. And the game against New Zealand was no different, as it also marked her first start of the tournament.

She finished with nine points and a team-high six assists, helping orchestrate the offense and keeping the ball moving.

The Bigger Picture

So yes, overall, Team USA once again dominated on both ends of the floor. Strong defense.  Balanced scoring. Improving team chemistry. All these have been key themes throughout the tournament.

At this point, the team’s goal appears to be more than just winning games—they are aiming to finish the qualifiers undefeated.
