As it turns out, Sandy Brondello’s leash with the New York Liberty’s front office was not as long as most people had expected. Just one season after winning a championship with the team, the Liberty decided to part ways with Brondello following their disappointing first-round exit in the WNBA playoffs.
The news came as a surprise for many, who were under the impression that Brondello would be given another chance next season, considering how injuries also played a pivotal role in what turned out to be a disappointing 2025 campaign for the Liberty. This clearly isn’t the case, though, with the front office opting to move on from the 57-year-old coach after four seasons.
Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve was asked to share her thoughts on the unexpected turn of events. Reeve spoke to the media ahead of Minnesota’s Game 2 loss to the Phoenix Mercury on Tuesday, and the veteran coach delivered a brutally honest message.
“I’ve said this before, I think Sandy is a heck of a coach and I think she’ll land on her feet like she always does,” Reeve said. “I am absolutely thrilled if I am Seattle, Toronto and Portland that I was just gifted a championship-level coach.”

After praising Brondello’s coaching acumen, Reeve implied that she does not believe the newly-axed coach will remain jobless for very long.
There is an opening with the Seattle Storm after they fired Noelle Quinn, while the two new WNBA expansion cities, Toronto and Portland, will also be looking for a coach ahead of their inaugural season in 2026.
Reeve, who has been the head coach of the Lynx for 15 years, is adamant that any of these three teams will be lucky to have Brondello as their coach. Reeve has had many battles against Brondello on the court, and she’s looking forward to more in the years to come.
