Las Vegas Aces superstar A’ja Wilson made history on Thursday, and yet, she still received criticism from people online.
Wilson was officially named MVP of the league for the fifth time in her career. It’s not a surprise she won this award considering she averaged 26.2 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. Nonetheless, she’s the first player in WNBA history to win MVP three straight times.
After accepting the award Thursday night, Wilson discussed her upbringing and how she never dreamed of becoming a five-time MVP.
“As a girl, you dream so big, and you write your goals out, and you just never imagine that you will be able to check them off,” Wilson said. “That’s why I cried harder on this one because 15-year-old A’ja wasn’t sitting up here dreaming about being a five-time MVP. She wasn’t dreaming about being a three-time champion. She was dreaming about surviving this world. So for me to sit up here surrounded by these trophies … it means a little bit more to me.”
It didn’t take long for Wilson’s critics to point out that she attended Heathwood Hall Episcopal, a private prep school in Columbia.
“Dang. That private school life must of been horrible. I feel for her,” one person replied.
“Yeah. Growing up in that gated community must have been tough,” a second person wrote on X.
“Aja Wilson went to Heathwood Hall Episcopal School with tuition fees of ~$20k per year in 2010,” another person commented.
“She acts as if she came up in the trenches lmao,” another person said. “She went to Heathwood Hall which is a private school. Tuition there is pretty much over 20 bands.”
Dream big, it can absolutely come true

At the end of the day, fans don’t know the hardships and sacrifices Wilson made to become one of, if not the greatest player the WNBA has seen over the past two decades.
While Wilson definitely deserves praise for her great 2026 season, we doubt she’s in the mood to celebrate right now. Her focus is on getting the Aces back into their second-round series with the Golden State Valkyries.
Game 3 between the Aces and Valkyries is set for this Friday at 9:30 p.m. ET.
