Phoenix Mercury star Alyssa Thomas has broken her silence following the full-blown controversy involving Caitlin Clark.
The WNBA punished Thomas for her actions against the Indiana Fever during their game on Wednesday. This is after Thomas drove her fist into Clark’s throat in the second quarter of the game.
The referees did not call a foul on the play, but the league decided to investigate the incident postgame. Thomas was ultimately assessed a Flagrant 2 foul for a non-basketball act, prompting a one-game suspension. She served it on Saturday, sitting out Phoenix’s 89-80 win over the Toronto Tempo.
Thomas spoke to reporters on Tuesday during practice, and she took the opportunity to address the developments surrounding the incident.
The six-time All-Star firmly denied any and all accusations about wanting to hurt Clark intentionally, describing this whole saga as “crazy.”
“Playing the game, being suspended, just the whole narrative that’s being painted out there,” she said. “It’s unfortunate that it’s come to this over basketball.
“A lot of us, myself included, didn’t even know the play took place until after the game. And now we’re being painted as thugs, and there are death threats against us. So, it’s really unacceptable. It is something that needs to change in this league, and I’m just really super tired of it.”
According to Thomas, she had no idea that there was even an incident until she learned about it after the final buzzer. She is adamant that she had no bad intentions against the Fever superstar.

Thomas also revealed that she and the Mercury players have received death threats over this saga. While fans have every right to call Thomas out for her actions, there is simply no place for such threats. As Thomas said, it is simply unacceptable — especially over a game of basketball.
