Paige Bueckers didn’t just return home on Wednesday night—she orchestrated the Dallas Wings offense with a veteran’s poise.

In just her third WNBA game, the No. 1 overall pick recorded 12 points and a game-high 10 assists against a Lynx defense anchored by All-WNBA forward Napheesa Collier. It wasn’t enough to prevent an 85-81 loss at Target Center, but it was a performance that commanded attention.

For Collier, who is the reigning WNBA Defensive Player of the Year and one of the league’s premier two-way forces, Bueckers’ early-season assertiveness has stood out.

“I think Paige is going to be really good,” Collier said postgame. “She’s a three-level scorer. She’s a great passer. Rookie year is really hard, so I would just tell her there’s going to be ups and downs. But from what I’m seeing, she’s staying aggressive in these first couple games.”

Napheesa Collier Praises Paige Buckers Amid Point Guard Adjustment

Bueckers consistently read Minnesota’s traps and blitzes, setting up teammates like Arike Ogunbowale and Myisha Hines-Allen in tight windows. She assisted on five of Dallas’ 19 field goals in the second half and became only the third rookie in WNBA history to register a 10-point, 10-assist game within her first three outings.

“She’s going to play a lot of minutes,” Collier added. “Point guard is a hard position, especially when you’re young. But take advantage of the position she’s in. I’m excited for her.”

Bueckers showed command over the Wings’ spacing and pace, delivering passes both early in the shot clock and in late-clock situations. On one key sequence with under four minutes to play, she drew a second defender at the top of the key, hesitated, and then kicked to DiJonai Carrington for a momentum-swinging three. She later found Ogunbowale for a catch-and-shoot 3-pointer to make it a two-point game late.

“I’m just trying to make the right reads and stay aggressive,” Bueckers said. “We’re learning how to build chemistry as a team, and I’m trying to put people in positions to score. That’s my job.”

Learning Curve at the WNBA Level with the Dallas Wings

Collier, averaging 28.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 2.3 assists to begin the season, sees the rookie learning curve from a position of experience. She also knows the demands of leading a team from the moment you step on the floor and has risen to the level of being an annual MVP candidate going through it.

“She’s already comfortable running the show,” Collier said. “But she’s going to have to keep adjusting—teams are going to scheme for her. Staying steady, staying aggressive—that’s how you push through it.”

Despite the loss, the Wings outscored Minnesota 28-24 in the paint and 21-17 in points off turnovers. However, being outscored 22-8 in fastbreak scoring was a problem for Dallas.

Bueckers was at the center of the Wings’ offense, leveraging her presence on the court as an off-ball threat against a tough Lynx defense focused on flooding the paint against her. Staying patient proved to be a strong sign of maturity for a rookie guard against an elite defense as opposed to getting frustrated.

“She’s a smart player,” Collier said. “You can already see it.”

The Wings fell to 0-3, but with Bueckers at the helm and Ogunbowale continuing her scoring surge, Dallas’ offensive foundation is showing real promise. Collier’s advice? Keep attacking, and let the game come. With Bueckers staying steady and confident, further strides will surely be made soon.

Brewers officially have a legit MVP candidate

On Tuesday night, the Milwaukee Brewers extended their winning streak to 11 games, and a key part of the team's momentum is a player who is in the National League MVP race. The red-hot Brewers entered Tuesday night facing one of the biggest threats to their winning streak, Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes. Milwaukee torched Skenes for two home runs and four earned runs in 4.0 innings pitched. Brewers first baseman Andrew Vaughn added extra damage in the sixth inning with a three-run home run that increased Milwaukee's lead to 12-0. Per Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Vaughn is in the NL MVP race after his home run on Tuesday night. "Andrew Vaughn suddenly in top 10 NL MVP discussion with another 3-run HR, giving him 32 RBI since joining the Brewers," Nightengale posted on X. "He is the gift that keeps on giving from the White Sox. They are about to go 24-4 since his arrival." Vaughn has helped the Brewers overrun and then take a commanding lead on the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central. Following their 14-0 win Tuesday night, the Brewers extended their lead to 7.5 games over the Cubs for first place. Vaughn is turning out to be a steal for the Brewers, as Milwaukee only gave up veteran pitcher Aaron Civale and cash considerations for the first baseman on June 13. While Vaughn might have a case to be in the top 10, he has much work before he becomes a legitimate contender for the NL MVP. Per FanDuel, Los Angeles Dodgers star slugger Shohei Ohtani leads the race with -20000 odds. Philadelphia Phillies left fielder Kyle Schwarber is second with +1800 odds. Those two players have been more consistent this season, whereas Vaughn has come on strong since leaving Chicago.

Cubs catcher lost to horrific-looking injury on same day he returns from IL

After working to return to the Chicago Cubs' lineup following an oblique injury, Miguel Amaya suffered a gruesome-looking injury in his first game back with the Cubs on Wednesday night. Running to first base, Amaya just beat out an infield single on a slow dribbler to shortstop when his left foot landed forcefully on the base, causing his leg to buckle and sending Amaya flying down the first base line. Following the injury, Amaya was carted off the field in Toronto with a towel over his face. The emotions shown by Amaya as he was carted off indicated he knew already he would miss more time in a season that has been marred by injuries. After the game, Cubs manager Craig Counsell confirmed Amaya would be going back on the injured list with what was diagnosed as a left ankle sprain. X-rays, however, were negative. The 26-year-old Amaya had just told reporters after being activated from the 60-day injured list that he was thankful he was healthy. Just three at-bats later, Amaya was once again injured. Amaya's three at-bats against the Blue Jays on Wednesday represented his first game action since May 24, when he recorded just two at-bats against the Cincinnati Reds before leaving the game with an oblique injury. In just 96 at-bats this season, Amaya is slashing .281/.314/.500 with four home runs and 25 RBI. Amaya's injury is another blow for the Cubs, who have seen their lead in the National League Central evaporate as the Milwaukee Brewers have now won 12 consecutive games and are 20-4 since the All-Star break. As has been the case in Amaya's absence, Carson Kelly and Reese McGuire will continue to be the dominant presences behind the plate for the Cubs. Joining with Amaya, the duo has helped the Cubs record a 2.8 Wins Above Average (WAA) at catcher, the highest mark of any MLB team. After Amaya's injury, the Cubs would go on to post a 4-1 win over the Blue Jays.

Oregon suspends former five-star WR recruit indefinitely

Oregon wide receiver Jurrion Dickey has struggled to live up to expectations in his first two seasons with the Ducks, and he is now in a terrible position heading into 2025 as well. Dickey has been suspended indefinitely by Oregon, head coach Dan Lanning announced on Tuesday. Lanning also suggested that Dickey may not play for the Ducks again. "We have two team rules; that’s respectful, be on time,” Lanning said, via James Crepea of The Oregonian. “There’s some pieces of that where I felt like he needed a break from us and we needed a break from that so we could focus on what’s in front of us right now. "Wishing him nothing but the best, as far as success and want to see him get back to where he can be a contributor somewhere; that might be here that might be somewhere else.” Dickey was a five-star recruit and rated as one of the top wide receivers in the country when he came out of Menlo-Atherton High School in Atherton, California, in 2023. He suffered an injury in his senior year in high school and redshirted as a freshman at Oregon. Dickey has two catches for 14 years during his time with the Ducks. Oregon went 13-1 in Lanning's third season with the program last season. The Ducks lost to eventual national champion Ohio State in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals.
