The Chicago Sky got some bad news on the Angel Reese front on Wednesday, as they put an end to their four-game losing skid by securing a much-needed 88-64 win over the Connecticut Sun.
In the second quarter of the game, Reese was assessed with a technical foul for making contact with an opponent’s head while fighting for positioning down low. That was the two-time All-Star’s eighth tech of the season, which will lead to an automatic one-game suspension for Reese.
This comes at a terrible time for the Sky, who are scheduled to face off against the Indiana Fever on Friday in a highly anticipated rivalry clash. Caitlin Clark, who is still dealing with a lingering groin injury, is not expected to play, and now, Reese will not take the court, either.
The Sky star, however, offered a glimmer of hope on her playing status as she discussed the incident during her postgame press conference.
"[The ref] said that it was either going to be a tech or a flagrant and I didn't know how that’s determined,” Reese said, via Moreau Sports Media Prod Co. on X. “... And he said it’s too late to be a flagrant.
“We’re going to go back to the league and talk about it."
Head coach Tyler Marsh was in the same boat in terms of Chicago’s plan to reach out to the WNBA. He, too, had a conversation with the game officials about the incident, and Marsh did not get a clear answer either. According to the rookie coach, the Sky willcontest the technical foul with the league.
As Reese indicated in her statement, the referees had an option to call a flagrant on her as opposed to a tech. Had it been the former, the former LSU star would not have had to serve a suspension for the Fever game.
Reese had previously had a technical foul rescinded by the league. Last season, the 6-foot-3 forward was ejected after receiving two technical fouls in quick succession for disagreeing with a game official in a matchup against the New York Liberty. After reviewing the incident, the WNBA decided to rescind the second tech.
This is exactly what Reese and the Sky are hoping for again as they look forward to having their star forward available for the game in Indiana.
