Angel Reese Rewrites Chicago Sky History on Thursday

Angel Reese played in her second game back on Thursday night against the New York Liberty following a lengthy spell on the sidelines. The 23-year-old missed seven straight games for the Chicago Sky due to a lingering back issue, but she was finally able to make her return to the court on Tuesday in a loss to the Seattle Storm.

Reese wasted no time announcing her comeback, dropping 19 points, seven rebounds, four assists and a block despite being limited to just 26 minutes against the Storm. The former L SU star was back at it again on Thursday in New York. Reese rewrote the history books yet again in another strong performance.

Angel Reese Makes Chicago Sky Franchise History

Reese logged 10 rebounds in Thursday’s contest, with one of them coming on the offensive end. She needed just that one offensive board, though, to make history.

According to Sky beat reporter Karli Bell, Reese moved up to the fourth spot on the Sky’s all-time offensive rebounds list with 266 to her name.

The fact that Reese achieved this feat in just her second season — and considering all the games she’s missed so far due to injury — makes it even more impressive. If she keeps up this pace, it would not be a surprise if she ends up near or at the top of the franchise record books once it is all said and done for her.

Sky Secure Massive Win Against Liberty

Chicago pulled off a huge win against the defending champions on Thursday night, 91-85. The Sky mounted an impressive fourth-quarter comeback that saw them outscore the Liberty, 26-17, in the final frame.

Reese, who is averaging 14.4 points, 12.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.4 steals this season, was pivotal for Chicago in the win, finishing with 21 points on 6-of-9 shooting, 10 rebounds, three assists and a steal in 29 minutes of play. She also knocked down a number of crucial free throws down the stretch as Reese went 9-of-10 from the charity stripe against the Liberty.

Kamilla Cardoso (22 points, 15 rebounds) was a beast in this one, while Ariel Atkins (19 points, five assists) had another strong outing.

Will Sky Shut Down Reese?

It is important to note that despite Thursday’s big win, the Sky have officially been eliminated from playoff contention. This is after the Los Angeles Sparks defeated Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings, who have also been eliminated, on Wednesday.

After Thursday’s contest, the Sky still have nine games remaining on their schedule, including a rivalry showdown against the Indiana Fever on September 5.

Reese has looked good since her return from injury, but at this point, it would not be a complete shock if Chicago decides to shut her down for the rest of the season. She has been on a minutes limit in her first two games back as Reese works to get her conditioning back, and this could be the case for her in the next couple of contests.

An injury from now until toward the end of the regular season could force the Sky to shut Reese down. This is exactly what they did last season, with the 6-foot-3 forward sitting out the last six games of the year due to a wrist injury.

A Reese shut-down is not unprecedented, and this could be the case again at some point this season, especially with Chicago left with nothing more to play for.
