Angel Reese’s Former Teammate Dealt Unfortunate Trade News

In July 2024, the Chicago Sky and Connecticut Sun agreed to a big trade, sending Marina Mabrey to the Sun in exchange for Rachel Banham and Moriah Jefferson with picks being involved as well.

Mabrey, 28, has spent time with the Los Angeles Sparks and Dallas Wings, then headed to the Sky and teaming up with Angel Reese briefly before being traded.

However, after less than one full season with the Sun, Mabrey requested a trade at the beginning of February.

Mabrey is still a productive player who averaged 14.4 points with 4.4 rebounds and 4.1 assists in a total of 40 games between the Sky and Sun.

Unfortunately for Mabrey, it doesn't seem that the trade request is being pondered by the Sun.

Sportico's Eric Jackson spoke with Sun president Jennifer Rizzotti and said that she has denied any such request from Mabrey.

“We knew at the time that she had already forced her way out of two teams, so it was a bit risky for us to trade for her, but we felt like it was worth it,” Rizzotti said.

Jackson added that Rizzotti said "the team is denying the request" from Mabrey.

The Sky acquired Mabrey in a four-team trade in February 2023, so she has changed teams quite a bit since entering the WNBA in 2019.

The Sun have a lot of new faces with Brionna Jones and DeWanna Bonner signing elsewhere, Alyssa Thomas and DiJonai Carrington being traded, and Rachid Meziane taking over as head coach after Stephanie White left for the Indiana Fever.

Ultimately, at least for now, the Sun plan to hold on to Mabrey despite the trade request, although things can certainly still change in the coming months.
