It’s all about adjusting to life in the WNBA for the 2026 number one draft pick, Azzi Fudd, right now. The Dallas Wings training camp is underway, and the 23-year-old is picking up extra shifts on the floor to find her groove quickly.
The Dallas Wings have been subject to a public hearing after prioritizing Azzi Fudd on draft night, overlooking prospects like Olivia Miles and Awa Fam. However, the 23-year-old looks focused on the job at hand and is not shying away from extra training to get up to speed faster.
After Tuesday’s practice, head coach Jose Fernandez was all praise for the rookie. He said, “She has a very unique skillset… She can create off the bounce. She invested and got better defensively. Now, she’s got to adjust on how people are going to guard her, but I think she’s really surrounded by good veterans, and she’s surrounded by good post players that are going to get her open.”

Expectations are high for Azzi Fudd as she reunites with former UConn teammate Paige Bueckers in Dallas. And while there were early jitters, the 23-year-old is starting to pick up pace during the training camp.
Fudd is expected to be the third person in a three-guard lineup in Dallas featuring Paige Bueckers and Arike Ogunbowale.
The instant chemistry boost is an obvious positive. But as the entire league goes small this season, Fudd brings in an edge that should help Dallas climb up the standings.
While everyone is aware of Fudd’s defensive acumen, her passing, and her off-the-ball movement, the 23-year-old’s shooting often flows under the radar.
Fudd shot 42.2% from behind the arc throughout college and is a superb free-throw converter (92.5%). This not only adds a potent perimeter threat to the Dallas offense, but it will also help head coach Jose Fernandez draw up plays where the 23-year-old can drive inside and towards the basket to punish any contact, and drive up the fouls.
In Jose Fernandez’s own words, Fudd “can shoot the s*** out of the basketball,” and the head coach is aware that the 23-year-old will get open looks on the floor, especially with the help of interior players like Alanna Smith and Jessica Shepard.
Not to mention, playing alongside two guards with good gravity in the WNBA, Fudd should start the season enjoying lesser attention, and Dallas should look to take full advantage of it.
Dallas plays its season-opener on May 9 in Indiana in a highly anticipated matchup. Do you think Fudd will be able to take the side past Caitlin Clark’s decorated Indiana Fever squad?
