It's not only Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White who was hit with a punishment due to recent comments about officiating. Her Las Vegas Aces counterpart, Coach Becky Hammon, has suffered the same fate.
White revealed on Monday that she was fined $1,000 after she showed her support for Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve, who was suspended by the WNBA for one game due to her "conduct and comments" during their Game 3 loss to the Phoenix Mercury.
Reeve had an outburst during the said contest and was ejected. In the postgame presser, she called for a "change in leadership" and called out what she described as "malpractice" in officiating.
White, for her part, backed up Reeve on Sunday and said that the coach "made a lot of valid points," adding that WNBA officiating "lagged behind for whatever reason."
As for Hammon, she was also slapped with a $1,000 fine for a similar reason, according to Alexa Philippou of ESPN. The Aces tactician agreed with Reeve's sentiments about WNBA officiating, saying, "From what I heard, she did not tell a lie. She said the truth. I think something has to change."
For what it's worth, Hammon was also critical of the WNBA referees following their Game 4 loss to the Fever, per CBS Sports. She particularly pointed out the free-throw discrepancy, as Indiana shot 34 free throws compared to Las Vegas' 11.
Hammon has yet to comment on the fine that the WNBA has issued her. However, it should be a major talking point when the Aces and Fever meet again on Tuesday for the do-or-die Game 5 of their semifinals series.
