On Sunday, the Las Vegas Aces topped Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever, 89-81. The Aces had finally snapped a three-game losing streak.
The 2025 season has not been a breeze for the Aces. Las Vegas is 6-7 for the season and the team is ranked fifth in the Western Conference standings.
Caitlin Clark got off to a quick start in the first half. In the first quarter alone, Clark dished out six assists and ended the game with 10 total.
Although she racked up some stats in the first half, she struggled with her shot. She went 7-of-20 from the floor and just 1-of-10 from the three-point line. She also managed to turn the ball over eight times; she is averaging 5.3 turnovers per game.
In the first four minutes of the game, Clark had dished out four assists. The Aces then called a timeout to adjust their defensive strategy to cover Clark.
In a post-game presser with the media, Hammon detailed the Aces plan to handle Clark.
“We talked about Caitlin, pockets are her money,” Hammon said. “You give her any kind of space in that pick-and-roll, that ball is gone, and they’re getting layups. I thought they got that in the first half, and then we were able to switch up our defense to, I guess something more doable, and something that we could execute better than the original scheme.”
Hammon then admitted that they had to “abort” their original defensive plan for Clark, adding that the Aces “never actually did it”.
“I think I called a timeout with about six something left in the first,” she added. “So yeah, I aborted it about four minutes later.”
The Aces matchup against the Connecticut Sun on Wednesday, June 25 at 7pm PT.
