The Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark has been a driving force behind the WNBA’s booming popularity. After winning the 2024 Rookie of the Year and pushing past comparisons with Chicago Sky’s Angel Reese, Clark is now seeing a new narrative take shape in her sophomore season.

Enter Paige Bueckers.

The former UConn standout entered the league as the No. 1 pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft, joining the Dallas Wings—mirroring Clark’s own arrival as the Fever’s top selection in 2024. And just like that, the media has already begun drawing comparisons between the two.

On Wednesday’s episode of The Herd, Colin Cowherd fueled the debate, making it clear where he stands.

“She’s been a phenom since she was in the sixth grade,” Cowherd said of Bueckers (Timestamp: 0:42). “She’s a better pure scorer, eventually a better shooter.”

He continued, “So it’s very possible in back-to-back years you’re going to get the two most popular WNBA players ever… Paige Bueckers, when she was at UConn, she was the women’s college basketball player of the year as a freshman. She was much better than Caitlin Clark much earlier in life.”

Of course, that overlooks Clark’s epic college career. She led Iowa to back-to-back national title games, despite not having elite teammates like Bueckers did with Azzi Fudd and Sarah Strong at UConn—both key to the Huskies’ recent championship run.

And then there’s the stat line. Clark holds the NCAA scoring record with 3,951 points and had an electric rookie year in the W, averaging 17.1 points, 8.2 assists, and 5.7 rebounds per game.

Colin Cowherd names players more famous than Caitlin Clark

Clark’s on-court impact is huge—but her influence off the court might be even bigger. On Tuesday’s Colin Cowherd Podcast, alongside Nick Wright, Cowherd made a bold claim about her stardom.

“In one year, out of women’s basketball, for a horrible team when she arrived, outside of LeBron and Steph, she is the most well-known basketball player currently playing in the United States,” Cowherd said (Timestamp: 14:28).

It might spark debate, but one thing’s for sure: Caitlin Clark’s influence is undeniable. Whether she’s facing Angel Reese or Paige Bueckers, she’s not just in the spotlight—she is the spotlight.
