The New York Liberty have secured their spot in the WNBA Playoffs. Despite this achievement, the Liberty's loss to the Golden State Valkyries on Monday night was a disappointing result.
The Liberty are considered the favorites to win the WNBA championship with a possible title repeat. However, they have not looked at their best, which is a worrying sign for their title hopes. Their primary rivals are the Minnesota Lynx, and they have done well this season.
Throughout the 2025 WNBA season, the Liberty and the Lynx have been set up for a rematch in the WNBA Finals. They have played against each other four times this season, and the Lynx have come out with a 3-1 lead.
Since the Liberty are not playing as well as they would like, star player Breanna Stewart is worried. She wants to win another championship, but they are struggling, which was evident in their loss to the Valkyries on Monday.
In their latest game against the Valkyries, the Liberty lost 66 to 58. That is a disappointing result, which has been the trend for a long while. They want to have more positive vibes in the locker room, but the losses keep piling up.
Injuries have played a factor, especially when the big three of Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu, and Jonquel Jones are undefeated when all three are part of the lineup.
With that, the rest of the Liberty roster must step up and help head coach Sandy Brondello emerge victorious. The team might be the favorites to win, but they still need to get big results, and that is not happening with the team's current state.
For Stewart, she is not impressed because they keep needing to come back. They are one of the best WNBA teams, and they want to live up to their billing as defending champions. That is not happening, which she pointed out before and after the Valkyries game.
"This is not championship-level basketball at this point and everybody needs to recognize that and understand that we need to get there and that starts with the mindset and then putting it onto the court."

"It's easy to fight back when you're down. This is disappointing, collectively. Yeah, there can be bright spots and whatever, but we have three games left, and we're not where we need to be. It's frustrating, and it's tough," Stewart said after the loss to Golden State.
Despite the dread they have been feeling as of late, the Liberty have secured their spot in the Playoffs. This came after the Indiana Fever lost on Monday, so the Liberty mathematically secured their spot despite losing to the Valkyries.

That achievement is impressive for the Liberty, but they have high expectations. If they keep playing badly, they might struggle in the long run. The Lynx are the favorites on the other side of the postseason bracket, so the Liberty must find their form before they reach the final stages of the postseason.
Stewie is correct by calling out the team because they need to hear it. If they can step up and prove themselves ahead of the Playoffs, they could repeat as WNBA champions.
