The Indiana Fever handed the New York Liberty their first loss of the season on Saturday, securing a 102-88 victory at home. The game also marked the highly anticipated return of star guard Caitlin Clark, who made an immediate impact.
Clark posted 32 points, eight rebounds and nine assists, including seven three-pointers. Her standout stretch came late in the first quarter when she hit three deep threes in a span of 38 seconds.
After the game, a reporter interviewed nine-year veteran Breanna Stewart of the Liberty, honing in on her perspective of Clark's stunning three with the shot clock winding down.
Stewart reflected with a smile when describing the special moment.
“Once she made it, she was just kind of like laughing, and I was laughing like it was a great shot. It's a tough shot and it's one of those ones where you're like, you know, and you go to the other end," she said. "I'm happy I'm seeing a lot of great sportsmanship comments from that, so love that."
Stewart acknowledged her awareness of the late-clock situation and the type of look Clark was looking for and admitted to guarding her as closely as possible. Nonetheless, the Fever superstar stepped back into her shot from the logo, draining the three and sharing a moment with Stewart on her way down the court.
Indiana hopes to carry the momentum from Clark's return through the next several games as itlook to surpass .500 for the first time since May 22.
