The New York Liberty and Dallas Wings were set to face off on Tuesday in a matchup between two of the better teams in the WNBA this season. Both teams come in with identical 13-8 records, and with control of the fourth seed in the standings, for now, on the line. But prior to the game, what caught everyone’s attention was Liberty star Breanna Stewart’s gift of a plate of hot dogs to Wings star Paige Bueckers.
“When you come to New York, you get a glizzy,” Stewart stated during the UConn duo’s pregame segment.
Breanna Stewart stated that her plate of hot dogs for Paige Bueckers ahead of the Liberty’s game against the Wings was because Bueckers and the Wings were in Toronto taking on the Tempo on 4th of July so she didn’t get to enjoy the American tradition of fresh hot dogs.
Jokes aside, it’s a big game with potential playoff implications. It’s also a matchup between the present and the future as Stewart is arguably a top three player in the WNBA right now, while Bueckers is on pace to become just that as her career progresses.
Stewart’s overall numbers are just slightly down this season, but she’s still making an impact at an All-Star level. She’s averaging 20.1 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.4 blocked shots with splits of 46.6 percent shooting from the field, 23 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 86.6 percent shooting from the free-throw line.
Meanwhile, Bueckers’ numbers are up from her Rookie of the Year campaign last season. She’s averaging 20.3 points, 3.9 rebounds and 6.1 assists with splits of 52.2 percent shooting from the field, 39.1 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 84.6 percent shooting from the free-throw line.
