Brittney Griner and the Atlanta Dream did not finish the 2025 WNBA season how they would have liked. After ending the regular season with a 30-14 record, the Dream secured the No. 3 seed in the playoffs. But their postseason run was short-lived, falling to the No. 6 Indiana Fever 3-2, who were without All-WNBA guard Caitlin Clark.

Griner saw her numbers take a hit in her first year in Atlanta. The former Phoenix Mercury center averaged 9.8 points on 51.8% shooting, 5.2 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game, all of which were career lows. And after the 2025 season, Griner saw her one-year, $214,466 deal with the Dream come to an end, becoming an unrestricted free agent. But before free agency officially opens on April 11, Atlanta has already made a massive move.

Angel Reese, after a college career with the LSU Tigers, was selected by the Chicago Sky with the No. 7 pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft. She spent her first two WNBA seasons with the Sky, averaging 14.1 points on 42.1% shooting, 12.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game, earning two All-Star nods in the process. Not to forget her recent run with Team USA at the FIBA World Cup qualifying tournament.

But on Monday, Chicago elected to trade Reese to Atlanta, putting her on a new team for her third WNBA season. Along with Reese, the Dream also acquired the right to swap second-round picks in the 2028 WNBA Draft, while the Sky received first-round picks in 2027 and 2028 in return.

Shortly after the Dream acquired Reese, Griner took to social media to share her first post, which many assumed was about the blockbuster WNBA trade.

"," Griner wrote on Threads.

Reese and the Dream will open the 2026 WNBA season against the Minnesota Lynx on May 10, and only time will tell if Griner will be joining them.
