Brittney Griner’s Interaction With Caitlin Clark’s Teammate Draws Attention

WNBA legend Brittney Griner did not need long to leave her mark on the preseason game between the Atlanta Dream and the Indiana Fever on Saturday.

Indiana won the game 81-76 to wrap up a perfect 3-0 preseason, but Griner may have been the most efficient player on the floor. She needed just two minutes of game time to hit a three-pointer and grab a rebound before Atlanta let the 6-foot-9 center take the rest of the game off

It was a conservative and calculated move to keep Griner, 34, on ice. The Fever and the Dream will play two more times this month in games that actually matter at the beginning of the 2025 WNBA regular season.

The short-lived shooting display was not the only way Griner caught the attention of fans on Saturday, though.

One notable beyond-the-buzzer moment came when Griner saw Indiana's Sophie Cunningham for the first time before the game.

During warm ups, the heartwarming reunion between the two former Phoenix Mercury teammates drew a strong reaction from fans of the W.

"Sportsmanship is important for the young fans to see," said one TikTok comment.

"love this camaraderie and good sportsmanship," a user agreed. "WNBA needs more of this."

"So great to see you two catching up, just like the good old days!" a fan reminisced.

"Love BG," said one comment.

Cunningham's career has been undeniably shaped by the nine-time WNBA All-Star Griner. They spent five of Cunningham's six seasons in Phoenix together, save for the 2022 season, which Griner missed while she was detained in Russia.

Both players found new homes this offseason. Cunningham was one of 10 new players to join Caitlin Clark and the revamped Fever roster this preseason, though she may be a doubt for the season opener against Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky on May 17 after rolling her ankle against Atlanta.

Atlanta made a statement by going out and getting Griner to pair with its core of two-time All-Stars Rhyne Howard and Allisha Gray and two-time WNBA champion Jordin Canada. While it did not result in a preseason win, the Dream is clearly keeping a lid on Griner's powers until the regular season tips off.
