In a stretch that has seen Caitlin Clark miss five games due to a groin injury, the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year has had the opportunity to observe the game from a coach's perspective.
On Tuesday, Clark got to put on another hat. As she accumulated the most votes (1,293,526), Clark was named a captain for the WNBA All-Star Game. So, she and fellow captain Napheesa Collier of the Minnesota Lynx drafted their teams for the prestigious game on Monday, with the results airing on ESPN's "WNBA Countdown" on Tuesday.
While both have talented rosters, Clark's has already taken a hit, unfortunately, due to injury. Satou Sabally of the Phoenix Mercury (Ankle) and A'ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces (wrist) are injured, and their status for the game is unclear at this time.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Clark addressed how much fun she had drafting a team, but also raised concerns about the injuries.
"It was really fun honestly, I got a great team," Clark said. "I mean two of my starters are injured at the moment. So I'm praying that they'll heal up for the game or else we might have a little bit of trouble. But yeah, it was really fun."
Sabally was spotted in a walking boot earlier this week, while Wilson got injured on the same night the draft aired.
While going up for a contested shot in the paint, the three-time WNBA MVP lost her balance and fell, landing awkwardly on her wrist. She will undergo an MRI on Wednesday.
While it's unclear whether either will be prevented from playing in the All-Star Game on July 19, a contingency plan is in place. According to the WNBA, Commissioner Cathy Engelbert will select replacements if players are unable to play.
The game will start at 8:30 p.m. ET and air on ABC.
