Caitlin Clark finally made her long-awaited return to action on Wednesday as the Indiana Fever hosted the Golden State Valkyries at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. It was her first game back after missing five straight due to a lingering groin injury.
Clark's comeback, however, was anything but ideal. The Fever suffered a deflating blowout loss at home, 80-61, as the Valkyries proved that they are, indeed, a force to be reckoned with this season.
Clark marked her return with 10 points on 4-of-12 shooting, five rebounds, six assists, two three-pointers and four turnovers in 25 minutes of play. Rust was clearly an issue for the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year, and she admitted after the game that she wasn't yet back up to speed.
“It's gonna take me a second to get my wind back,” Clark said, via Chloe Peterson of IndyStar. “Like I said, there's not really anything that kind of replicates a true game.
"And I felt pretty good. I was trying to play shorter stints, but sometimes it's almost harder to sit on the bench and then come back into the game. It’s just finding a balance of that, but just trying to get my legs under me.”
The last time Clark played was on June 24, which means that she was out for more than two weeks. As she said, she will need time to get back into proper game shape, and Wednesday's performance served as proof that she still has some work to put in.
Clark's next chance to bounce back will be on Friday when the Fever return to action in a home game against the Atlanta Dream.
