Caitlin Clark Makes Impressive Women's Sports Card History

Caitlin Clark has been setting records throughout her basketball career, from high school to college to the WNBA.

Clark has broken standards on the court, at the box office and in television ratings. Another area she is setting the pace is memorabilia, more specifically trading cards. On Saturday night, a one-of-a-kind autographed Caitlin Clark rookie card became the highest-selling card in the history of women's sports, going for $366,000 at an auction by Goldin.

"Graded GEM MT 10 by PSA, with Autograph Certified and graded GEM MT 10 by PSA/DNA (108254724). Rookie Card. Indiana Fever sensation and former Iowa Hawkeyes collegian Caitlin Clark—arguably the most popular basketball player in America—appears on this singular Panini Prizm WNBA Signatures Gold Vinyl Prizm debut-year commemorative," Goldin's website says. "This ultra-premium showpiece is bestowed with a single-copy print run, superb blue ink signature, and dazzling Gold Vinyl Prizm visual effect, making it one of Clark's finest inaugural season showpieces from Panini's flagship WNBA brand."

Clark's previous personal-high for a card sale was $234,850. Tennis legend Serena Williams had the most expensive card sale in women's sports history at $266,400 before Clark eclipsed that mark.

"Why did this specific Clark card sell for so much? Panini’s Prizm set is the exclusive WNBA trading card license holder’s most popular, so the rarest Clark autograph rookie card in that set was all but certain to become her most valuable one once it was pulled from a pack and put up for sale," Brooks Peck of The Athletic wrote.

Three of Clark's highest-selling cards have eclipsed six figures, with two others topping $97,000 at sale.

As the Indiana Fever star continues to soar to new heights in her career, we'd also expect her trading cards to keep doing numbers at auction.

Clark's second WNBA season will get underway on May 17 against Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky.

Mercury climb ESPN’s power rankings as playoff push heats up

PHOENIX — After going 2-1 at home last week, the Phoenix Mercury climbed up one spot on ESPN’s Power Rankings. The Mercury ended their latest road trip with a win against the Chicago Sky on Aug. 3 and carried the win into their homestand. Phoenix went on to defeat the Connecticut Sun and Indiana Fever last week, with Alyssa Thomas making history as the first WNBA player to record three consecutive triple-doubles against the Sky, Sun and Fever. Despite losing to the Atlanta Dream on Aug. 10, Phoenix is trending in the right direction after its slump. “… The Chemistry between [Thomas], Satou Sabally and Kahleah Copper — along with the addition of DeWanna Bonner — still puts the Mercury in a better position than they were a week ago,” said ESPN’s Kendra Andrews. Although the Mercury won’t have a perfect homestand, they will face the Las Vegas Aces on Aug. 15 to give themselves momentum heading into their next road trip. Phoenix will have the second-easiest schedule out of all teams, behind the Dream’s schedule. With the Minnesota Lynx clinching a playoff berth, playoff spots are limited and every game for Phoenix is a must-win. With momentum building and a favorable schedule ahead, the Mercury are positioning themselves for a strong push down the stretch.

Jets QB Justin Fields had 'alarming' practice against Giants

New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields found out he has a long way to go following his performance at Tuesday's joint practice with the New York Giants. Per Connor Hughes of SNY TV, Fields started hot at the practice before struggling during the move-the-ball period. "Very interesting practice for #Jets QB Justin Fields," Hughes posted on X. "He finished 7 of 12 with a TD. 5 of 5 to start practice. Then 0 for 4. Finished 2 of 3 with the really impressive TD to Jeremy Ruckert in red zone (starter 18 yard line). "The offensive performance was a bit alarming in move-the-ball period of practice. Fields Co. had three attempts to get down field. They didn’t gain a first down. Only gained yards twice (two short Breece Hall runs). Three sacks. That needs to be fixed. #Giants defense toyed with NYJ during that period." Some Jets fans online thought Hughes was using hyperbole to characterize the practice, but he doubled down on his judgment of the offense. Fields looked strong on his first and only drive in the Jets' 30-10 win over the Green Bay Packers on Saturday night. He went 3-of-4 passing for 42 yards and rushed two times for 14 yards and a touchdown. However, the Giants defense at the joint practice is a much better unit than the short-handed one the Packers trotted out for the first preseason game. Fields' issues seen with the Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers, with holding the ball too long and not being able to pass consistently downfield, were a factor against the Giants. Following Saturday's game, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn said Fields was getting better but had a lot to improve on. Tuesday's practice was a humbling reminder that Fields needs to become a consistent passer if the Jets are going to move the ball on good defenses in the regular season.

Brewers' Quinn Priester tells the truth after escaping loss in comeback vs. Mets

The Milwaukee Brewers looked as though their hot stretch was going to end on Sunday, when the New York Mets jumped to a 5-0 lead. It was certainly not one of Quinn Priester’s best starts, as the right-handed hurler allowed six earned runs on 10 hits (including two home runs) while recording only two strikeouts and issuing a walk across 4 1/3 innings of work on the mound. It was an especially frustrating individual performance for Priester, considering how great he was in a previous start. Last Monday, Priester went seven innings long and gave up just an earned run on two hits in a 3-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves on the road. That was his 10th straight pitching win, and the streak appeared to be on the verge of getting broken in the Mets game. Fortunately for Priester, Milwaukee’s bats came alive just in time to secure another team victory — and keep Priester’s streak going. Priester speaks up on Brewers’ thrilling win against the Mets The Brewers managed to pull off a come-from-behind 7-6 victory, capped by a solo, walk-off home run by rookie sensation Isaac Collins. “It’s indescribable,” Priester said after giving up a season-high 11 hits (h/t Adam McCalvy of MLB.com). “They definitely made up for a lot of my miscues today, but it’s a team game. I love being a part of this team, because otherwise I wouldn’t be able to smile right now.” On the season, Priester is 11-2 with a 3.49 ERA and 1.24 WHIP through 22 appearances (17 starts). The Brewers have now won their last three series via sweeps, and they will look to keep it going with a three-game set coming up against the National League Central division cellar-dwelling Pittsburgh Pirates at home.

Browns Coach Was Asked If Shedeur Sanders Will Start Second Preseason Game

The Cleveland Browns kicked off their preseason with style last Friday, starting fifth-round pick Shedeur Sanders at quarterback. Despite not having many first-team reps under his belt, he absolutely delivered under pressure. Sanders finished his preseason debut with 138 passing yards and two touchdowns. The Colorado product also had 19 rushing yards against the Carolina Panthers. Although he could've called out his naysayers following the team's 30-10 victory, he chose to take the high road during his postgame press conference. He even gave his coaching staff and teammates all the credit for his performance. "I'm comfortable with being uncomfortable, so that's what it is," Sanders said. "I got pockets of finding my rhythm, and I got to get into that quicker, regardless of anything. But overall, I felt like me out there, and I couldn't do it, of course, without the time. I couldn't do it without the playcalling. I couldn't do without anything." After watching Sanders pick apart the Panthers, NFL fans are hoping to see more of him this Saturday against the Philadelphia Eagles. However, there's no guarantee he'll get a ton of snaps. Speaking to reporters this week, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski was asked if Sanders will start against the Eagles. He refused to name a starter for his team's second preseason game. "I’m not there on the game itself. By Wednesday, Thursday, I’ll have a better feel for the game and how we’re gonna handle that, and I’ll update you guys. But not there yet," Stefanski said. A few moments later, Stefanski was asked if he knows who'll start Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals. One again, he was unwilling to commit to one of his quarterbacks. "I think you take everything into account, but we’ll see how we get through this week and then make a decision – make a decision on when to make a decision." It's possible Cleveland will want to see Dillon Gabriel under center before they give the keys to the offense back to Sanders. The rookie from Oregon returned to 11-on-11 drills earlier this week.
