If you're watching Caitlin Clark play basketball, there are a few things you can almost count on. For one thing, she'll be wearing No. 22. For another thing, there will be some nifty passes.
And for yet another thing: She will knock down a 3-point shot.
Unless, that is, you were tuned in on Thursday night for the Fever's showdown against the Atlanta Dream on the road, a game in which Indiana was seeking revenge for this week's dramatic 91-90 loss.
The Fever got the win, 81-76, but it was an ugly, whistle-heavy affair in which both teams appeared to be out of sorts offensively. That especially applied to Clark, who scored just 11 points with six assists and four turnovers--as well as five fouls--but also did something she had not done since she was a sophomore at Iowa.
She did not make a 3-pointer. Clark was 0-for-5 on the night from the arc.
Clark had started the year red-hot from 3, making four in the opener and five in the Fever's second game. Last year, in 40 games with the Fever, Clark made a 3-pointer every time out. There were only five games in which she did not make more than one from distance.
As a senior at Iowa, Clark played 39 games and not only made at least one 3-pointer in all 39, she made at least two in every game. In 2022-23 for the Hawkeyes, she played 38 games and had only one game in which she did not make multiple 3-pointers. But she made one 3-pointer in that lone game.
You'd have to go back to January of Clark's sophomore year in college--Jan. 13, 2022, in fact--and a win at Purdue to find a time when Clark did not make a 3. She was 0-for-6 that day, but played the remaining 19 games with at least one 3-pointer made each time out.
Add it all up, and it's been not just three years since Clark failed to make a 3-pointer, but it's been 138 full games since that has happened.
If she has another similar streak from here, expect her to have at least one 3-pointer in every game she plays until 2028.
