Caitlin Clark Reacts to Unfortunate News on Monday

Over the past two seasons, the Iowa Hawkeyes women's basketball team has continued the trend of success spearheaded by former record-breaking guard Caitlin Clark. They reached No. 8 in the AP poll this week after continuing their undefeated start to Big Ten conference play with a 91-70 win at Carver-Hawkeye Arena over then-No. 12 Ohio State Buckeyes.

Freshman guard Addie Deal's career-high 20 points and senior forward Hannah Stuelke's 18-point, 14-rebound double-double were overshadowed by a serious injury sustained during the game by senior guard Taylor McCabe. Iowa announced on Monday that she suffered a torn ACL and will miss the rest of her final season.

"This isn’t how I imagined my senior season ending, but adversity has always been part of the game,” McCabe said in a statement. “I’m committed to my recovery and to supporting my teammates in every way I can the rest of this season.

"I’m grateful for the love and encouragement from my coaches, teammates, and everyone who has been with me throughout this journey at the University of Iowa,” she continued.

One of those people who was there for part of her Hawkeyes journey was Clark. McCabe's first two seasons were Clark's last two in Iowa City, which both ended in trips to the national championship game.

Since Clark was selected by the Indiana Fever No. 1 overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft, McCabe's scoring average nearly tripled. She went from averaging 3.3 points per game as a sophomore in 2023-2024 to 8.5 points per game this season.

On Monday, the Fever star left a comment on a caption-less Instagram post that McCabe made shortly after the official injury announcement. One photo showed McCabe in an Iowa uniform, and the other showed her as a child wearing a USA Basketball jersey.

“Proud of you,” Clark said, with a black heart emoji.

Lucy Olsen and Kate Martin, fellow WNBA players and Iowa alums, also left supportive comments on McCabe's post.

In 2025, Clark had to learn how to deal with unfortunate injury news during the WNBA season. She only managed to play 13 games in her second pro season because of multiple muscular injuries.

That is not to mention the other four Fever teammates who suffered season-ending injuries by the time they began their playoff run that ended in the WNBA semifinals.

The Hawkeyes will have to bounce back from the difficult injury news ahead of a road game on Thursday against the USC Trojans. Meanwhile, Clark's preseason schedule with the Fever was just released, highlighted by their first exhibition game on April 25.
