Caitlin Clark Reveals True Feelings About Angel Reese Rivalry

Saturday marks the fifth matchup between Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark and Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese since they entered the WNBA last season.

But their history goes back further than that. The two faced off multiple times in college, where their rivalry first captured national attention. In the 2023 NCAA championship game, Reese, then playing for LSU, hit Clark with the "you can’t see me" hand gesture during the closing moments of the Tigers’ win over Iowa.

They met again in the Elite Eight the following year and were later drafted in the same WNBA class. Clark and Reese also finished No. 1 and No. 2 in the Rookie of the Year race last season, further fueling the ongoing rivalry narrative.

Ahead of Saturday's season opener for both the Fever and Sky, Clark spoke to the media and was asked about the so-called rivalry between her and Reese.

She noted how much the media loves it but emphasized that it’s ultimately "great for sport."

"I mean, you guys love it, that's for sure…," Clark responded. "Rivalry is great for sport. Like, I understand that. I grew up loving rivlalries. I grew up in Iowa. Iowa-Iowa State. That's like a pro matchup in the state of Iowa. Like, I understand that… Rivalry is always a big thing, so I think it's more than anything."

Clark went on to say that for the players and teams, it’s just another game in terms of their preparation.

"As a player, you approach the game the same every single time, or you should," she added. "That's how you should approach every single game. You prepare the same way, you come ready to play, whether it's the team that's last in the league or the team that's first in the league. It doesn't matter.

Clark wrapped up her answer by pointing out that Chicago is in fact the closest team to Indiana, so she gets it geographically.

"I think for the fans, it's great," the reining Rookie of the Year said. "They love it. I mean, Chicago is the closest team to us. We bus there usually, so I get it geographically. But I think for our team and our group, it’s we prepare the same way every single game, but I expect today to be an awesome game."

This season, Clark's Fever and Reese's Sky will play five times as opposed to last year's four. Here are the dates beyond Saturday:

  • June 7
  • July 27
  • Aug. 9
  • Sept. 5
