Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever took care of the Atlanta Dream on Friday night in large part because of Sophie Cunningham.
Cunningham had 16 points and 10 rebounds in the Fever's 99-82 win. She made four attempts from beyond the arc, proving she's capable of lighting up the boxscore. What made her performance so impressive is that it came roughly 24 hours after she put the Fever on notice for their lack of consistency this season.
"We’re running out of time to be honest and I think that it’s going to light a fire under our butts, so hopefully you’re going to see that energy shift tomorrow," Cunningham said on Thursday. "We have really good spurts, but it’s just…why are we not being consistent? Why are we not clicking when we need to click? Why do we get low when they go on a run?"
Following the Fever's victory over the Dream, Cunningham had nothing but good things to say about her teammates.
"I really do think this is a really unique and special team," Cunningham said. "In the locker room, we really do love each other. We love spending time together."
On Saturday morning, Clark showed Cunningham some appreciation on Instagram.
Clark reposted a video that said, "Sophie Cunningham was electric in our dub over the Dream last night, recording her first double-double of the season with 16 PTS, 10 REB, and 4 3PM."
In addition to reposting that video, Clark used this word to describe Cunningham: "Dawg."
Suffice to say, Clark and Cunningham have developed a nice bond on and off the hardwood this season.
The Fever will return to action Sunday to face the Dallas Wings.
