Caitlin Clark's Bold Promise to WNBA Commissioner Before Championship Game

The Indiana Fever may have played seven games without star guard Caitlin Clark and are just 8-8 on the 2025 WNBA season, but they’ve still made it to the championship game of the league’s fourth-ever in-season tournament.

They'll hit the road to face the Minnesota Lynx in the Commissioner's Cup Championship, with tip-off scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile, Sunday brought big news for Clark, as the WNBA named her the Eastern Conference captain for the All-Star Game. She set a new league record with 1,293,526 fan votes and has now been named an All-Star for the second straight season.

Shortly after the announcement, the Fever shared a video of WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert delivering the news to Clark. Before ending the call, Engelbert wished her and the rest of the team luck in the Commissioner’s Cup Championship.

Clark's response, though, had the entire team laughing as they sat together in the locker room.

"Yeah, we about to get that dub Cathy," Clark said.

Clark has always had that playful personality, and it was on full display in front of the commissioner.

The reigning Rookie of the Year earned the captaincy despite missing seven games. In the nine games she did play in, though, she's averaged 18.2 points, 5.0 rebounds and 8.9 assists.

With the captain title, Clark will have the opportunity to draft her squad for the All-Star Game. On July 8, she and Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier will select their teammates from the pool of players the WNBA will announce beforehand.

The game itself will be held on July 19 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
