With Caitlin Clark still sidelined due to a quad injury she suffered in late May, the Indiana Fever were amid a three-game losing streak entering the month of June.

On Tuesday, the Fever looked to end their drought, facing Sonia Citron and the Washington Mystics at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

Indiana has become shorthanded at the guard position to start the season. Clark is out until at least June 10, and Sophie Cunningham aggravated an ankle injury in Friday’s loss.

As a result, the Fever signed former Los Angeles Sparks guard Aari McDonald to an emergency hardship contract, hoping she can help fill the void left by their injuries. She saw early playing time in her Indiana debut and quickly made an impact on the defensive end.

With 27 seconds remaining in the second quarter against Washington, McDonald was guarding Brittney Sykes one-on-one. McDonald was playing tough defense before taking a tough shot to the chest, sending her to the deck.

Sykes was called for an offensive foul, giving Indiana the ball to end the half.

Immediately after McDonald drew the charge, Clark celebrated by pointing toward her team’s basket, mimicking the referees’ signal. Aliyah Boston reacted to the charge as well, looking in the direction Clark was pointing with her hand on her forehead.

McDonald spent three seasons with the Atlanta Dream before joining the Sparks in 2024. Through her first four WNBA seasons, the former Arizona Wildcats standout averaged 8.6 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game.

Following the Mystics game, the Clark-less Fever will face the Chicago Sky for the second time this year on Saturday.
