The city of Indianapolis has a very busy weekend ahead. On Saturday afternoon, the Indiana Fever will be hosting the New York Liberty at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Then on Sunday night, the Indiana Pacers will host the New York Knicks at the same venue for Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals. Both games are expected to draw in millions of viewers from all around the country.
But in between those two basketball events, the 109th Running of the Indianapolis 500 will then take place on Sunday morning at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, after a week of pre-race events.
Many athletes and influencers are expected to attend the race, including Fever's star player, Caitlin Clark. But on Friday, sports journalist Scott Agness reported that "all indications are that Fever guard Caitlin Clark will not attend the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday."
Many speculated that she'd wave the green flag or at least attend, especially since Gainbridge will be presenting this year's race for the fourth year in a row. Clark has been a brand ambassador for Gainbridge since March 2024.
It's also important to note that Clark skipped the Indy 500 practice last Sunday, while Fever head coach Stephanie White and other teammates attended. White even waved the green flag during practice. She was joined at the track by forward Aliyah Boston and rookie Makayla Timpson.
Penske Entertainment, owner of the speedway, IndyCar and the Indy 500, has used Clark at series events before. She was a guest of Hy-Vee at the inaugural 2022 race at Iowa Speedway and returned last year as Grand Marshal. But, Clark did not attend last year's Indy 500 due to scheduling conflicts.
