The Indiana Fever have been fairly quiet this WNBA offseason. However, that all changed moments ago.
On Wednesday morning, the Fever announced that Kelsey Mitchell has agreed to a new contract for the 2025 season. The All-Star guard has spent every year of her WNBA career in Indiana. When the 2024 season ended for the Fever, she admit that she wasn't sure if she'd be back.
"It's definitely a lot of emotions and thoughts that flow through my mind. I think everything for me is so fresh, I don't know what I need and what I'm gonna do," Mitchell said. "I've always had a home in Indy, so it could potentially be a home for me again. But I think right now the switching dynamic of my family and everything, I gotta do what's the best for me. I gotta be selfish about that process."
Clearly, Mitchell was able to prioritize her family while staying with the Fever.
Mitchell was outstanding for the Fever last year, averaging 19.2 points per game while making 46.8 percent of her shots from the field. Her return to Indiana is great news for Caitlin Clark. They formed quite the connection last season.
Fever coach Stephanie White released a brief statement on this signing.
"I’m thrilled that Kelsey is returning to Fever. She has been an integral part of this franchise from the moment she was drafted," White said. "I have watched her journey from the sideline since her time in college and have always admired her work ethic, approach to the game and the way she interacts with her teammates. I can’t wait to work with her on a daily basis."
Since entering the WNBA in 2018, Mitchell has averaged 16.8 points per game. Judging by last year's production, she's showing zero signs of slowing down.
It'll be interesting to see what other moves the Fever make this offseason. For now, Indiana fans are fired up about this deal.
