The Phoenix Mercury are gearing up to face a familiar foe on Friday as they will look to avenge Wednesday’s 72-63 loss to the Atlanta Dream in their rematch a couple of days later.
In the first encounter of the week, Phoenix was held to a season-low six points in the first quarter, not being able to get the cylinders firing from tip-off. While they did distribute the ball around and get opportune looks that they wanted, their shots were not falling, going just 2-for-16 (12.5%) from the field and 0-for-5 from three.
The offense started to break out after the horrid start, but the Dream’s – and specifically Tina Charles’ – ability to chase after rebounds every chance they got was detrimental to Phoenix’s hopes of pulling off a comeback.
Charles, now the No. 2 scorer all-time in WNBA history and a former Mercury, achieved a double-double with 12 points and 17 rebounds in Atlanta’s win. The Dream outrebounded the Mercury 47-33, with 16 of them being offensive boards.
“Defensive rebounding [and] getting to their shooters I think is going to be extremely important,” Tibbetts said on what needs to change after the game Wednesday. ” We got to come out with a little remedy offensively to be better.”

During an off-night as a whole for the Mercury, Diana Taurasi and Sophie Cunningham both started and scored six points combined in the loss. Taurasi didn’t score until there was 3:18 left in the game and Cunningham was just able to not be shutout, swishing a 3-pointer with 39 seconds remaining.
While it was a game that the team would like to move on from, newly acquired forward Monique Billings is confident that the Mercury can turn things around when they have another crack at the Dream.
“Just got to watch film, I think we ran out of gas,” Billings said. “I am not saying we didn’t give our best effort, but we were kind of a step off from the beginning of the game. Just some adjustments that we’ll see by watching film, get new energy, get a new pace going and I think Friday we’ll come out with a better punch.”
