Cheryl Reeve Reflects on Successful Alex Rodriguez Team Gathering

Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve shed some light on her experience getting invited to a team gathering event hosted by the new Timberwolves/Lynx owner, Alex Rodriguez.

Reeve first lightheartedly discussed the menu for the big event, then shifted to a more serious tone when asked about the value of the gathering ahead of an important season.

“Any connection that you make right, and teaching, that was part of his thing… we didn’t talk a lot of basketball, we talked a lot about the way you conduct yourself, the way you handle things,” Reeve said, per an April 29 X update from Andrew Dukowitz.

“It’s true that any situation that you’re in, it’s what you make of it, and if you choose to sit in the corner and don’t talk to anyone and don’t get to know someone like Alex or his team, then you probably wasted an opportunity, I felt we had a pretty engaging group over there with him,” Reeve added.

Rodriguez became the owner of the Minnesota group in parts, first joining the ownership group alongside Marc Lore in 2021 by buying a minority stake in both the Lynx and the Minnesota Timberwolves.

By June 2025, the NBA approved the full sale for Rodriguez and Lore to officially become majority/controlling owners of both teams.

But Rodriguez understands the culture and impact Reeve has had on the Lynx in her 17-year tenure with the Lynx, winning four WNBA championships and Coach of the Year honors.

In an interview with The Athletic, Rodriguez lauded Reeve’s efforts and hopes to continue investing in her hard work.

“Cheryl’s done an incredible job,” Rodriguez said. “I mean, she’s really built a dynasty there. So our job is to give her budgets and let her run as fast as she can.”

The Lynx finished first in the Western Conference last season with an impressive 34-10 record, but unfortunately crashed out in the semifinals of the playoffs to the Phoenix Mercury 1-3.

Reeve hopes to keep the momentum strong for the upcoming season once star player Napheesa Collier returns from injury.

Reeve also aims to improve the infrastructure for the Minnesota organizations.

Alex Rodriguez Expresses Desire to Build New Arena

The Target Center has been home to the Timberwolves since 1990, making it the second-oldest venue in the NBA, behind the iconic Madison Square Garden for the New York Knicks.

With a capacity of 19,356, the Target Center also plays host to the Lynx’s games. The team last renovated it in 2017, although they have since made several efforts to improve the fan experience and increase revenue.

But the Minnesota owner would like to move on from it. Rodriguez noted that it’s probably a “five- to seven-year project” to get the Timberwolves/Lynx a new stadium.

“We want to keep it in Minneapolis, downtown,” Rodriguez said.

Recently, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has backed the City Center site on Nicollet Mall as the ideal location for a new Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx arena, according to the Business Journals.

Like Rodriguez, the Mayor would also like to keep the teams in downtown Minneapolis.

So, do you have any suggestions on where Minnesota should find a place for its new arena?
