Angel Reese’s second season with the Chicago Sky did not end in the most ideal manner. Apart from the fact that she missed the last four games of the campaign due to injury and a WNBA suspension, the two-time All-Star was also involved in a bit of drama with the Sky front office after she virtually threatened to leave Chicago if her goals did not align with those of the team.
Reese quickly apologized to her teammates after realizing her mistake. However, the damage had been done. The Sky did not let it pass. They punished the 23-year-old by benching her for the first half of their game against the Las Vegas Aces, which she ultimately missed entirely due to her back issue.
Either way, it appears that Reese and the Sky have moved on from the matter. Sky GM Jeff Pagliocca spoke to the press on Friday, addressing the incident directly.
"Angel is an ascending young talent in this league who's had two very, very good seasons here in Chicago," Pagliocca said, via Alexa Philippou of ESPN. "Obviously we went through what we did. I feel like we closed the chapter on it. She spoke to her teammates, she spoke publicly. We moved on as a team.
“She's a special player. And I have good conversations with Angel daily, with her team daily. They're constant, and they're productive."
Pagliocca also addressed the elephant in the room. Both Reese’s comments and the Sky’s punishment have led to rumors about the former LSU star’s imminent exit. According to the Chicago GM, the team is operating under the premise that Reese will remain in Chicago “until I hear differently.”
There appears to be some level of uncertainty surrounding Reese’s future with the Sky, but Pagliocca seems adamant that she will be the franchise’s cornerstone star for the years to come.
