Chicago Sky Urges WNBA to Make Pivotal Angel Reese Change as She Braces for Possible Punishment

For just the second time this season, Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese was sidelined Thursday with a back injury. While the issue isn’t expected to be serious, Reese remains at risk of missing a game soon for another reason.

The former LSU star has already been called for seven technical fouls this season, and WNBA rules now state that upon receiving an eighth, a player is automatically suspended for one game. The league raised the threshold from seven to eight this year, aligning the policy with the extended 44-game regular season.

With the Sky set to face the Indiana Fever on Sunday, interim head coach Tyler Marsh revealed that the team has formally requested the WNBA rescind one or more of Reese’s technical fouls—hoping to help her avoid an automatic suspension.

“We’re a product of passion—I don’t think you can take that out of the game,” Marsh said. “We’ve done our part on our end to try and get a couple of those [technicals] rescinded. But that’s up to the league’s discretion… it kind of is what it is at this point.”

The Sky have their backs against the wall as they try to stay in the playoff hunt. With 20 games remaining, Chicago sits at 7–17 overall and enters Sunday on a four-game losing streak.

Despite the struggles, Angel Reese has been the lone bright spot. The All-Star forward continues to make history in her rookie season, particularly with her dominant stretch of double-doubles.

Reese is currently averaging 13.8 points, 12.5 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.4 steals per game, while shooting 44.8% from the field and 77.8% from the free-throw line. Her status for Sunday remains uncertain, but there’s growing anticipation that she could return to the court.
