Atlanta Dream star Brittney Griner hasn't had the best time over the past couple of days. On Wednesday, against the Dallas Wings, she was thrown out of the game after confronting the referee. Now, news about her injury has emerged.
Griner wasn't able to finish the Dream's thrilling 88-85 win against the Wings after she was given two technical fouls in a matter of seconds and ejected early in the third quarter of the contest.
It came after WNBA referee Angelica Suffren called a foul on Griner while the center was battling for a rebound. The Dream star was obviously not happy with the call and approached the official to air her displeasure, leading to her first tech.
While Suffren tried to get away after calling the first tech, Griner continued to jaw at her and even had to be held back. After some contact with the official, Suffren called another technical, causing Griner's ejection.
Griner ended up playing around 16 minutes, finishing with four points, four rebounds and one block.
As mentioned, the unfortunate turn of events didn't stop there for Griner. On Thursday, the 10-time All-Star landed on the Dream's injury report because of a neck issue.
According to Desert Wave Media, Griner has been listed as "doubtful" for their game against the Phoenix Mercury on Friday as a result.
Here's the Dreams' full injury report:
To make matters worse for the Dream, they'll be facing a fully healthy Mercury squad, with the team not reporting any injuries ahead of the contest at The Gateway Center Arena @ College Park.
Griner's injury certainly comes at an inopportune time for the Dream, who are fighting for a playoff spot. With less than 20 games remaining, every matchup matters, especially since there isn't much of a gap separating them from the lower seeds.
Atlanta is currently No. 5 in the WNBA standings with a 16-11 record. However, they are only one game ahead of the No. 6 Indiana Fever and two above the No. 7 Las Vegas Aces.
The No. 8 Washington Mystics are just two and a half games below them, while the No. 9 Golden State Valkyries trail them by three games.
Griner is a key contributor for the team, averaging 10.6 points, 5.6 rebounds and a team-high 1.1 blocks. She has started in all 25 games she has played in, so her absence is certainly a big blow to the Dream, especially on the defensive end.
