Dream Linked to Trade for Fever’s 2-Time WNBA Champ

The Atlanta Dream could add a veteran star to their roster this season. DeWanna Bonner of the Indiana Fever has expressed her unwillingness to return to the team after falling out of the rotation. In the first three games of the campaign, Bonner was a starter. However, head coach Stephanie White replaced her with Lexie Hull and has been part of the second unit since then.

She's also listed as out due to personal reasons since the second week of June. Despite the success that the Fever has had since Caitlin Clark's return, Bonner prefers to continue her career elsewhere.

Front Office Sports' Annie Costabile reported on the news on X on Tuesday.

According to Costabile's report, Bonner listed two teams as her preferred destinations -- the Phoenix Mercury and the Atlanta Dream.

"According to multiple league sources, the two-time WNBA champion has no interest in returning to play for the Fever," Costabile wrote.

However, trading for Bonner might be difficult for the Dream. The two-time WNBA champion is owed at least $200,000 this season, after she signed a one-year, unprotected contract.

Atlanta's remaining salary cap is at $23,939. If the Dream is interested in acquiring the veteran star, they'll have to add another player to match the salary, without giving up the important players on their roster.

"Considering most players with salaries comparable to Bonner’s will likely be off limits in a trade, a package could end up including more than one player to clear enough cap space."

Bonner appeared in nine games for the Fever, averaging 7.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists.
