Caitlin Clark ‘s incident on Tuesday’s match against the Connecticut Sun had been long over, but its effects remain vivid for the fans. Among the supporters is host Jimmy Fallon, who made a short plea to express disappointment at the alleged mistreatment of the Indiana Fever star.

On June 19’s episode of his show, Fallon was talking about the current US political situation but then seamlessly connected it to the WNBA issue on the deliberate physicality aimed at Clark. The night-show host pleaded:

“When the press first asked Trump how he’ll stop the fighting, he thought they meant the WNBA. What is going on? Protect Caitlin Clark at all costs, please. Enough of this. Please!”

The incident sparked when Caitlin Clark, holding the ball during the third quarter, got poked in the eye by Sheldon, who swung her arm upward. The former Iowa Hawkeye then shoved the former Ohio State to gain space. However, Marina Mabrey didn’t like this and delivered a brutal shoulder bump on Clark, sending her blindsided to the floor. All players, including Tina Charles, eventually got assessed with heavy fouls.

Sheldon got a flagrant-1, while Mabrey, who initially got a technical, was upgraded to a flagrant-2. Perhaps the most controversial of all was Clark getting a technical, which for most fans, was unnecessary since she hadn’t started the confrontation and was believed to have been targeted.

Moreover, the Fever hadn’t let this slide. Sophie Cunningham defended Caitlin Clark by stopping Sheldon from making a fastbreak seconds left in the fourth, leading to the veteran guard getting expelled. Head coach Stephanie White, who had previously complained about the WNBA’s poor officiating on Clark, also fiercely defended her player after the match.

Nevertheless, the league is yet to respond to the issue of the alleged physicality against Caitlin Clark, who’s rising to greater heights.

Caitlin Clark: “I’m here to play basketball” amidst heated incident

During the post-game interview against Connecticut, Caitlin Clark sent her candid response over the brutal confrontation involving the Suns’ roster. When reporters asked whether the Indiana Fever star would “stand up more” for herself, she responded:

“No, I mean, at the end of the day, I’m here to play basketball, and that’s my job,” Clark said. “That’s what I’m going to do. I was excited. Honestly, the review took too long for me. I wanted to get playing basketball again, and that’s exactly what I did in the rest of the third quarter. I made all three free throws, and it was a tough three. I was excited about a three.”

Thankfully, Caitlin Clark hasn’t been involved in any confrontations. However, the Fever’s two-game losing skid after the victory against the Suns is a concern that’ll be a heavier issue in their season run.
