The Dallas Wings officially welcomed German center Luisa Geiselsöder to the team on Sunday after her standout season in France. However, she did not participate in practice as she underwent medical evaluations. Instead, she spent the day intently observing from the sidelines, engaging with coaches and teammates as she began her WNBA transition.
“She did not [practice],” Wings head coach Chris Koclanes said. “We’re excited for her to join us, though, and just coming off all sorts of momentum with that French championship. So, be excited that she’s winning. She did not practice today and gotta get some medical stuff done, and we’ll see if she’s available tomorrow or not.”
The Wings initially selected Geiselsöder as the 21st overall pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft, but she remained overseas to continue her development. Now 24 years old, she is set to make her WNBA debut five years after being drafted, joining the league after a strong run with one of France’s top clubs.
She arrives in Dallas following a pivotal role with Basket Landes, where she helped lead the team to the Ligue Féminine de Basketball (LFB) championship. Over 16 league games, she averaged 11.4 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per contest while shooting 47.5% from the field and 35.7% from three-point range. She also added 1.2 blocks per game, serving as both a reliable interior presence and floor spacer.
In the LFB Finals, Geiselsöder played a key part in Landes’ comeback from a 0–1 deficit, including an 18-point performance in Game 1. Her consistent production and clutch play earned her a spot in the starting lineup throughout the playoffs and solidified her status as one of the team’s most trusted contributors.
Dallas originally awaited FIBA clearance before she could suit up, but by Sunday evening, Geiselsöder was officially listed as probable on the Wings’ injury report for Monday’s matchup against the Seattle Storm—an encouraging sign that her debut could be imminent.
“Excited to have the full roster here—even though we announced it—until she got through the French championship, which, congratulations to her. Big, big championship for her and her team,” said Wings general manager Curt Miller. “But glad that she’s finally arrived and we’ll get her through medical clearance as fast as possible, FIBA clearance, and then hopefully have her available for the game.”
Miller, who has followed Geiselsöder’s development with the German national team and in international play, praised her versatility and maturity.
“She’s a really versatile post player,” Miller said. “What stood out to me internationally watching her and preparing for USA Basketball is that she’s an underrated defender around the rim. She can score at multiple levels. She’s talented with her back to the basket, but also can stretch it to three.”
Although her potential is clear, Miller emphasized that Geiselsöder is still ramping up after missing the entire training camp due to Basket Landes’ extended playoff run.
“She’s a whole training camp behind, so we know that putting her on the opening day roster is gonna take some time for her to fit in, but [we’re] excited for her potential,” he said.
Miller shared insight into the Wings’ process for preparing for all possible outcomes regarding Geiselsöder’s timeline to report to the team. This required patience as she advanced through each round of the French postseason.
“She was in an elimination game in the quarterfinals. We had a flight booked. She advanced to the semis. She was in an elimination game in the semis, and we had a flight booked, and she advanced to the final. And then they’re down 0–1 in the championship, and then they win two consecutive games to win the championship, Miller explained. “So there were many opportunities for Luisa to get here, and while we were disappointed she couldn’t get here earlier, we were happy with her run.”
Geiselsöder’s combination of shooting, rebounding, and rim protection fills a clear need for a Dallas frontcourt that is still coming together amid a season of significant transition. With her experience in high-stakes moments and ability to adapt to different roles, the Wings are optimistic that her presence will bring stability and upside as the season progresses.
The Wings are scheduled to host the Storm on Monday, May 19, at 7:00 p.m. CT at College Park Center. Geiselsöder’s probable status puts her on track to make her long-awaited WNBA debut.
