After the Fever's thrilling and gut-wrenching loss to the New York Liberty on Saturday, coach Stephanie White let loose criticism of the game's officiating that certainly sounded as though it was strong enough to get the attention of WNBA officials.
While no official announcement of a fine was put out, White left no doubt that she was, in fact, punished by the league, letting it slip in a press conference after Indiana's 83-77 loss to Washington on Wednesday. Yes, it seems White broke her own news.
White was asked about the refs in the loss to Washington, the Fever's first game played with Caitlin Clark sidelined because of a quad injury. Indiana lost, 83-77.
White, smiling, responded, "Do you want me to get fined again?"
On Saturday, White was blunt in saying she felt that Clark was fouled by Natasha Cloud on the final play of the game. That was probably enough to earn a fine, but she went on.
"I think it's pretty egregious what's been happening to us the last few games," she said. "The disrespect for our team, right now, has been pretty unbelievable. So it's disappointing that it doesn't go both ways, or it hasn't gone both ways. But we also can't allow that to consume us, right? We have got to be able to play through that."
White acknowledged that there is a system by which the Fever can register objections to calls, but she was again blunt in saying that the system is all but useless.
“We can send stuff in and communicate our grievances, so to speak, but I don’t know that I ever feel like the system works,” White said. “We're not looking for a change. We're just looking for consistency. You know, I felt like the second half of Atlanta, at least at our place (on Tuesday), was at least consistent, right, and that's that's the thing that we're looking for.”
The Fever will play again on Friday at home against Connecticut.
