The Indiana Fever had their mettle tested on Sunday in a tough road game against the Seattle Storm.
With Caitlin Clark still sitting out with a right groin injury, the Fever had to dig deep in order to secure a hard-fought 78-74 win against Seattle, marking their fifth consecutive victory.
Sophie Cunningham was one of the stars of the show on Sunday as the 6-foot-1 guard dropped a season-high 17 points on 5-of-6 shooting. Cunningham also added five rebounds and two assists, while also knocking down four triples in a team-high 33 minutes of action.
After the game, the 28-year-old admitted how she believes the Fever likely would have come out on the losing side in this type of tightly contested battle a couple of months ago. Cunningham credited her team’s maturity as one of the main factors in Sunday's win.
“I think it shows the growth that we had as a team,” she said, referencing the Fever holding off the Storm’s late rally, “because earlier in the season we were so inconsistent. If teams were to do that, we would normally lose those games.
“But just shoes we’re getting closer, we’re trusting each other. I think that’s the biggest part is trusting, and knowing that we can win those games even if they go on runs.”
The Storm erased Indiana’s 12-point lead in the fourth quarter by going on an 11-0 run in the final minutes of the game. The Fever held on for the win, though, which says a lot about their resilience.
Head coach Stephanie White was asked after the game to share her thoughts on Cunningham’s statement about the team’s ability to bounce back from adversity and how it relates to the Fever’s growth throughout the season.
“I think it says a lot,” White said. “They know one another a little bit better now. We're maturing and how we handle situations and how we handle runs. We stayed neutral. We didn't get too high, we didn't get too low.
“I was proud of our group for how we stayed not just together, because we always stay together, but how we stayed even, and we came down and we went to the next play. We made some big plays in key moments that allowed us to win the ballgame.”
White and Cunningham are clearly on the same page here. It is also evident that the entire squad is operating at the same wavelength right now, and its five-game winning streak is a testament to this notion.
The Fever will now be looking to make it six in a row on Tuesday in another road game against the Los Angeles Sparks.
