The Indiana Fever shocked the WNBA world yet again on Sunday with an incredible 89-73 road win over the Las Vegas Aces.
It was the No. 2 seed Aces who were expected to secure a Game 1 win at home to kick off this best-of-five WNBA playoffs semifinal series, but the Fever, who have been decimated by injuries this season, clearly had other plans.
Kelsey Mitchell led the charge for Indiana with an MVP-level performance. The three-time All-Star went off for a game-high 34 points on 12-of-23 shooting, to go along with four triples, one rebound, three assists and two steals in 34 minutes of action.
The Aces held Aliyah Boston down to just six points on 3-of-9 from the floor, but the Fever star was able to contribute in other areas of the game. Boston registered 11 rebounds and five assists in another strong showing from the two-time All-Star.
After the game, Indiana head coach Stephanie White was asked about Boston’s low scoring output in Game 1. White admitted to an unexpected development in the game amid Boston’s struggles from the field.
"I certainly wouldn't have thought necessarily that we'd be in this position with [Boston] having six points," White told reporters after the game. "The thing about AB is that she's such a good decision-maker. She doesn't force things that aren't there.
The Fever coach made it abundantly clear that Boston is so much more than just a scorer, and the former No. 1 overall pick proved just that on Sunday. White credited the Aces for their defensive scheme against Boston, but at the same time, pointed out that the 23-year-old’s versatility allowed her to open up the game for her other teammates.
"[Boston], and I've said this multiple times, has been the most effective, I feel like, from all of our changes,” White continued. “But she continues to be our rock. She continues to be so steady for us.
"I thought her defensive execution was right on point. She stayed disciplined, and we need her to continue to do that."
The Fever will need Boston to be at her best when they battle the Aces again in Game 2, as these two teams face off again on Tuesday in Las Vegas. Another win for Indiana will put them in an excellent position to win this series in Indiana in either Game 3 or 4 to book their spot in the WNBA Finals.
