The Phoenix Mercury tied their WNBA semifinal series with the Minnesota Lynx at one game apiece on Tuesday night, and they needed a historic comeback to make it happen. The Mercury erased a 20-point deficit in their 89-83 win.
With just under six minutes to play in the third quarter, the Mercury found themselves trailing 59-39 and seemed to be on their way to facing a 2-0 series deficit that would have made winning the series an extremely daunting challenge.
But from that point on, the Mercury doubled up the Lynx on the scoreboard, outscoring them by a 40-20 margin over the final 16 minutes of regulation to send the game to overtime. A last-second three-pointer from Sami Whitcomb to tie the game was the biggest shot that helped complete the comeback.

Phoenix ended up owning the overtime, limiting the Lynx to just four points in the extra quarter. This was only the fifth 20-point comeback in WNBA playoff history, and it's tied for the third-largest comeback.
It's a huge win for the Mercury, not only because it kept them in the series and tied it up, but also because they wrestled home-court advantage away from Minnesota. The series now shifts to Phoenix for Games 3 and 4. The Mercury had one of the league's best home records this season at 15-7. They also split two home games with the Lynx during the regular season.
If they can at least get a split in these next two games, that would at least guarantee them a winner-take-all Game 5 with a chance to go to the WNBA Finals.
