Sophie Cunningham played a key role in her first season with the Indiana Fever in 2025. Not only did she establish herself as an enforcer for the team, but she was also a reliable backup guard, averaging of 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.0 steal.
The 29-year-old WNBA veteran, in particular, stepped up in a big way for the Fever in the Commissioner's Cup championship against the Minnesota Lynx. Cunningham recorded 13 points and seven rebounds off the bench to help Indiana secure a 74-59 win.
While Cunningham ended up playing in only 30 regular-season games last season due to a season-ending torn MCL in her right knee, there's no denying that she made quite an impact on the team.
That being said, the Fever made sure to bring Cunningham back this offseason. While the team didn't reveal the details of her contract, Alexa Philippou of ESPN reported on Sunday that it's a one-year deal.
For what it's worth, Cunningham was an unrestricted free agent and previously said she would prioritize getting paid. Clearly, the Fever value what Cunningham brings.
Indiana General Manager and COO Amber Cox shared a statement following the team's decision to re-sign Cunningham, highlighting how important the former Missouri star is to the Fever.
"We are thrilled to have Sophie back with the Fever and are grateful for her commitment to return and build on what we started a year ago," Cox stated in a press release by the Fever.
"Not only is Sophie one of the best three-point shooters in the league, but she is an exceptional teammate, both on and off the court. She plays with infectious energy that impacts not only our team, but our fanbase as well."
With her return, Cunningham reunites with Caitlin Clark, Lexie Hull, Kelsey Mitchell, Aliyah Boston and Makayla Timpson. Both Hull and Mitchell were free agents but reached new contracts with the Fever on Saturday.
Indiana also signed free agent Monique Billings and is also reportedly bringing in Ty Harris as it continues to build its roster.
