Fever star Sophie Cunningham plays down big WNBA development

Sophie Cunningham has been a key contributor for the Indiana Fever this season. Despite coming off the bench in 15 out of her 18 appearances this year, the 6-foot-1 guard has been instrumental in Indiana’s rotation throughout the first half of the campaign.

Right now, the 29-year-old is averaging 9.6 points on a career-best 49.1% shooting. Cunningham has also registered 2.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 23.1 minutes per contest.

However, apart from the energy she brings to the court and her veteran leadership, perhaps the biggest asset she brings to the table for the Fever is her ability to stretch the floor. This season, Cunningham is knocking down 1.7 triples per game on an impressive 41.7% clip.

Combined with her efficiency from deep last season, Cunningham has firmly established herself as one of the most dangerous three-point threats in the WNBA.

Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham leads WNBA in three-point efficiency

Speaking on the latest episode of her “Show Me Something” podcast, Cunningham addressed her major WNBA development.

“Highest three-point percentage in the WNBA since joining the Fever, gang,” Cunningham declared.

Since taking her talents to Indiana via a blockbuster multi-team trade last year, the eight-year veteran is averaging 1.7 triples per game on 42.6% shooting. That is the highest mark in the league since the 2025 season.

Cunningham, however, was quick to play down her league-leading efficiency.

“I’ve been kind of not shooting the ball so well so far this year,” she said. “But I think I’m starting to heat up a little bit.”

“… There’s a stat for everything nowadays. We could find something I’m good at.”

She then turned her attention to her Fever teammates, pointing out that they, too, have been on fire from beyond the arc.

“But I think [Aliyah Boston], Caitlin (Clark) and [Kelsey Mitchell] are all up there,” Cunningham said. “That’s great. They should be.

“And we’re not even playing good basketball yet.”

As Cunningham said, the Fever have barely scratched the surface this season. They have shown flashes of brilliance, but there’s no denying that it has been an up-and-down campaign for them thus far.

Indiana is currently 11-8 and seventh in the standings. In Cunningham’s mind, however, it’s only a matter of time before they get their groove and emerge as a much bigger threat in the WNBA.
