Before game three of the first round of the WNBA Playoffs between the Indiana Fever and Las Vegas Aces, it was reported by Chantel Jennings and Annie Costabile that A’Ja Wilson would not face league repercussions following the incident with the fan in the stands.
All the Fever fan did was point at her and say that she committed a foul against Fever star Sophie Cunningham, according to Adam Martin of Lindys Sports.
The Aces would go on to lose 99-89. After the game, Wilson shared with reporters that she approached the fan because she felt “Disrespected.”
“If I see a man come at me, taking steps towards me and pointing at me, I don’t give a damn what you said. I don’t give a damn how you said it, the tone. That is unacceptable. You don’t step towards me … and point at me. I’m not for that s—,” Wilson said.
Per The Athletic, “Any coach, player, or trainer who deliberately enters the spectator stands during the game will be automatically ejected,” according to the rules, which also state the incident will be reported to the league commissioner.
The rules also specify that the stands start with the first row of fans.
According to The Athletic, the WNBA determined that Wilson was standing in a player escape lane next to the stanchion rather than in the stands. Based on that, the officials elected not to eject her from the game.
Aces players including bench players Kierstan Bell and Kalani Brown stepped in between Wilson and the fan, but the only problem is, players that are not in the game cannot leave the bench area during an altercation.
“Violators will be suspended, without pay, for a minimum of one game and fined.”
Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham recently weighed in on four-time WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson’s altercation with a fan at Gainbridge Fieldhouse during game 2 of the first round of the WNBA Playoffs.
On her podcast ‘No Hesitation with Sophie Cunningham and Drew Hanlen,’ Cunningham compared Wilson to LeBron James, and they wouldn’t suspend her for her actions.
“She’s like the LeBron James of our league, and so of course they’re not going to suspend her… Something should have happened,” Cunningham said on Saturday’s episode of her podcast, the No Hesitation Show with Drew Hanlen. “The two people who came off the bench onto the court; that shouldn’t have happened. I think there’s definitely a double standard.”
She would later add that the Fever “would have gotten a lot of backlash from that.”
“We yell from the rooftops that we want equality, that we want to be treated like the men, that we want all this stuff and we deserve all these things, and we do, we do deserve it,” Cunningham said.
“But if you’re asking for all these fans to come— and you have new fans, who are real sports fans, and they come and do something that a sports fan would probably do if you’re on the opposing team, and then you’re going to go for him for just pointing, saying that you fouled? Grow up.”
The Aces would go on to beat the Fever in the best-of-3 series to advance to play the Golden State Valkyries.
Unfortunately for the Aces, they would lose the game one against the Valkyries 71-60 on Sunday night.
