FIBA Makes Team USA Announcement After Hungary Game

Team USA put on a show on Thursday morning in the quarterfinals of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Berlin, Germany.

The Americans came off a 3-0 sweep in the group phase, earning an outright spot in the quarterfinals. They faced Hungary on Thursday, which proved no match for Team USA’s dominance.

Napheesa Collier led the charge for the U.S. with a game-high 19 points. Rhyne Howard came off the bench for 15 points, while Kahleah Copper, Jackie Young and Caitlin Clark all scored 10 points apiece. Clark also showcased her elite playmaking skills, dishing out a game-high nine assists.

The Americans cruised to a 108-56 victory to punch their semifinals ticket.

FIBA took to social media to make an announcement after Team USA’s massive win. It was a record-breaking rout for the Americans.

“USA’s 108 points vs Hungary was the highest ever recorded by a team in a Quarter-Finals game at the Women’s World Cup,” FIBA posted on X.

That wasn’t the only World Cup record Team USA broke on Thursday. According to FIBA, the U.S. was also the first team to register 30+ assists in a quarterfinal game.

They led 59-30 at halftime. The 29-point deficit was the biggest halftime margin in any quarterfinal game, while Team USA’s 59 points in the first half were their best total after 20 minutes in any knockout game at the World Cup.

Team USA will now keep a keen eye on Thursday’s quarterfinal game between Spain and Australia. The winner will face the U.S. in the semifinals on Saturday.
