The Indiana Fever’s growing injury list just got longer, and Sophie Cunningham is the latest name to land on it. The team announced she will miss the remainder of the season after suffering an injury against the Connecticut Sun.

Sophie Cunningham will miss the remainder of the season after suffering an injury during our game at Connecticut on Sunday. In a corresponding move, we have signed guard Shey Peddy to a 7-day hardship contract and released Kyra Lambert.” – Indiana Fever on X

The loss is a blow for Indiana, already without rookie Caitlin Clark and other key guards. But the news quickly took a lighthearted turn when veteran Sydney Colson responded with her usual brand of humor.

“Ay y’all @aarimcdonald @caitlinclark22 get a load of this guy @sophie_cham,” Colson joked on X.

Colson’s post made Sophie Cunningham the punchline of the moment, even as fans processed the bad news. Some praised the levity, saying Colson’s humor is exactly what the Fever need during a difficult stretch. Others questioned whether the timing was right, given how thin the roster has become.

For Cunningham, the injury ends a season that never had a chance to stabilize. She was brought in to provide energy and experience, but now she joins Clark on the sideline. With Peddy signed on a short-term hardship deal, the Fever are left shuffling pieces once again.

Whether Colson’s playful jab lands as a moment of comic relief or comes off as poor timing, one thing is clear: losing Sophie Cunningham is yet another setback for a Fever team already stretched thin.

Sophie Cunningham’s Sister Lashes Out At WNBA For ‘Poor Officiating’ After Fever Guard’s Injury

Not everyone is laughing about Sophie Cunningham’s injury. Her sister, Lindsey Cunningham, delivered a scathing message to the WNBA on social media, calling out officiating standards after Sophie’s season-ending setback.

“.@WNBA maybe you should focus less on fining players for commenting on your poor officiating & more about hiring officials that are able to call a consistent game and protect your athletes. Pathetic. Praying for you .@sophaller

The WNBA has already been called so many times, and yet the actions have always fallen short, if there even was any. The players, coaching staff, and fans alike have already told them time and again that the officials are responsible for keeping the game fair and injury-free. But so far, it is still a WNBA problem being swept under the rug.

For the Fever, losing Sophie Cunningham compounds an already serious injury crisis. With Caitlin Clark, Sydney Colson, and Aari McDonald also sidelined, Indiana has been forced to s cramble for short-term replacements just to keep a full roster.

Lindsey’s passionate defense adds another layer to the conversation. While Colson may have joked about Cunningham’s injury, her sister’s words highlight the real frustration simmering around player safety in the WNBA.
